1,200 autoworkers in Canada lose their jobs as GM ends third shift at Oshawa Assembly Plant
The midnight third shift at General Motors’ Oshawa auto assembly plant was eliminated by the US-based automaker following the completion of the Friday, January 30 shift. The ensuing layoffs affect up to 1,200 workers throughout the auto supply chain in the industrial belt just east of Toronto. Some 500 direct GM jobs in the plant will be axed along with another 200 third-party workers who laboured side by side with the GM employed assembly workers. In addition, across the supply line, it is expected that about 500 more auto parts workers will lose their jobs. Almost all are members of Unifor, Canada’s largest private sector union.

Israelis breach Gaza boundary in march calling for settlements
"During the past few hours, hundreds of Israeli civilians have attempted to approach the fence in an area designated as a closed military zone and prohibited to civilian entry," the military said, condemning the breach. "Approaching the barrier area and entering it is dangerous and disrupts the activity of security forces in the area," it added. The breach occurred as hundreds of Israeli activists marched towards the Gaza Strip, calling for the construction of settlements there.

Netanyahu releases his answers to 7 October probe, placing blame on political rivals
Addressing the Knesset foreign affairs and defence committee on Thursday, Netanyahu presented a series of selective quotations and heavily redacted discussions spanning the 12 years preceding the attacks. While the prime minister is authorised to withhold material he deems a threat to national security, critics argue the document is designed to shape the narrative in his favour, minimising his responsibility for the events that led to the deaths of around 1,150 people in Israel and the capture of 254 more.

The pro-democracy People’s party is leading the polls, but Thailand has been here before
People’s party, fuelled by support among young and urban voters, is leading opinion polls ahead of the election on Sunday. However, it is not expected to win an outright majority, and it may face an uphill struggle to form a coalition with rivals, which have previously blocked its bids for power. It also faces looming legal battles.

Amazon's tax bill plunges after GOP tax cuts
That’s largely because of the generous new depreciation breaks GOP lawmakers included in their One Big Beautiful Bill, something that’s particularly important to Amazon which — in addition to maintaining a vast infrastructure for its ubiquitous delivery business — has been spending billions to build out artificial intelligence data centers.

Despite assurances, residents and officials prepare for possible ICE operations during Super Bowl
Both Kristi Noem, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary, and her adviser Corey Lewandowski announced in the fall that agents would conduct operations during the nation’s largest sporting event. While Homeland Security Investigations teams that are focused on preventing human trafficking and the sale of counterfeit goods have long worked the event, immigration operations would be unusual.

AIPAC Coordinates Donors in Illinois House Primaries
With Israel’s reputation reaching record lows among Democrats, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) is resorting to ever more sophisticated methods to support its preferred candidates while cloaking its own involvement. The amount of money that the premier pro-Israel organization is able to spend in elections is extraordinarily valuable to candidates who would otherwise have little chance of winning. But it now comes with a catch: If voters know the money comes from an organization advocating on behalf of Israel, it can do more harm than good. AIPAC road-tested its stealth approach in a 2024 House primary in Oregon that pitted Susheela Jayapal, the sister of Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), against physician Maxine Dexter. Dexter raised relatively little money throughout much of her campaign, then saw a last-minute deluge organized by AIPAC coupled with outside spending through super PACs, which themselves turned out to be funded by AIPAC. The timing of the donations meant that there was no meaningful transparency before voters went to the polls, and Dexter expressed a mixture of ignorance and umbrage when her opponents suggested the money actually came from AIPAC. The main super PAC in question (named 314 Action) explicitly denied that any funding came from AIPAC—a claim revealed as a flagrant lie once disclosure records finally became public. But by then, Dexter had triumphed and was on her way to Congress. Campaign staffers expect AIPAC to continue using the tactic in this year’s primaries. “In these districts where we have a progressive primary fight, you’re going to see AIPAC put out a network of shell PACs, putting money into races without putting their name on it,” said Usamah Andrabi of the progressive campaign group Justice Democrats.

How ‘ex-rebels’ testimonies lead to conviction of Cumpio, Domequil
Lawyers of detained journalist Frenchie Mae Cumpio and lay worker Marielle Domequil maintained that their clients are innocent, disagreeing with the court decision that was only based on testimonies from “rebel returnees” without supporting evidence. On January 22, Tacloban City Regional Trial Court Branch 45 Judge Georgina Perez convicted the two accused for violation of Section 8(ii) of the Terrorism Financing Prevention and Suppression Act, sentencing them to 12-18 years of imprisonment. They were, however, exonerated from their charges related to illegal possession of firearms and explosives. Several international and local groups, especially the families of the accused, decried the court ruling. Four “rebel returnees” presented by the prosecution claimed they all saw Cumpio and Domequil at a New People’s Army (NPA) camp and handed cash, ammunitions, and tapetas (long pants that easily dry) to an NPA commander in Barangay San Andres, Catbalogan City, Samar, on March 29, 2019. The court said the two accused knew three of these former rebels. During the alleged commission of the crime, the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and its armed wing, the NPA, were domestically designated as terrorist organizations through Proclamation No. 374 issued by former President Rodrigo Duterte on December 5, 2017. Lawyer Julianne Agpalo of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers asserted on Thursday that there is no provision in the Terrorism Financing Prevention and Suppression Act that says a president can designate an organization or an individual [as terrorists] by mere execution of an executive order.

Is it 1933?
The brutal terror on the streets of Minneapolis, with masked thugs arresting people for having the wrong accent or the wrong skin color, reminds many people of the Nazis. The podcaster Joe Rogan, after enthusiastically endorsing Trump in 2024, has been wondering: “Are we really going to be the Gestapo? ‘Where’s your papers?’ Is that what we’ve come to?” Minnesota governor Tim Walz said: “We have got children in Minnesota hiding in their houses, afraid to go outside. Many of us grew up reading that story of Anne Frank. Somebody is going to write that children’s story about Minnesota.” Right-wing actors, including the U.S. Holocaust Museum and the Department of Homeland Security, energetically reject the comparisons. (Even as the DHS account is a constant stream of white nationalist memes). They point out that ICE is merely targeting “illegals” whereas the Gestapo went after German citizens—as if the Nazis didn’t attack Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe for not having proper papers.
