Ba'athism was non-Marxist "socialism" (i.e. not socialism) that had plenty of positive qualities, but was no substitute for communism. It was also waffling in its supposed anti-imperialism. I detest the term brainwashing, but it's absolutely true that many workers and peasants in MENA are gripped by false consciousness. It's also true that a lot of Westerners are too fat and comfortable to revolt, but I don't think that's any better than revolting because you want to be able to murder your neighbour for having a different interpretation of the Quaran than you. Sectarianism and religious delirium is just as corrosive to class consciousness as being bribed by treats, except more personally destructive.
