Italian police fire tear gas as protesters clash near Winter Olympics hockey venue
The brief confrontation came at the end of a peaceful march by thousands against the environmental impact of the Games and the presence of U.S. agents in Italy. Police held off the violent demonstrators, who appeared to be trying to reach the Santagiulia Olympic ice hockey rink, after the skirmish. By then, the larger peaceful protest, including families with small children and students, had dispersed.

The left smells blood after shocking Democratic primary result

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and the Progressive Caucus.

San Francisco teachers to walk out Monday against austerity in the richest tech enclave on the planet
The educators, para educators and school staff are members of the United Educators of San Francisco (UESF) and teach in the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). They voted 97.6 percent for strike action last month, following a 99.34 strike authorization in December, expressing the deep anger in the schools over poverty wages, chronic understaffing and relentless cuts. Strike action was also overwhelmingly authorized last week by 35,000 teachers in the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), raising the potential for a statewide and national movement in defense of public education. The outrage over cuts to schools has even led the San Francisco principals and administrators union to hold an emergency vote this weekend with the aim of a sympathy strike.

There Is One Marxism: Against “Western”, “Eastern” and “Third-World” Marxism By Nikos Mottas
The recurrent attempt to divide Marxism into “Western,” “Eastern,” “Third-World,” or other geographically marked variants reflects a deeper theoretical retreat from Marxism as a scientific worldview and a revolutionary method. Such distinctions implicitly transform Marxism from a universal theory of capitalist society and class struggle into a set of culturally conditioned perspectives, shaped primarily by geography rather than by objective social relations. From a Marxist-Leninist standpoint, this approach is fundamentally mistaken. Marxism is one, not because it ignores historical and national specificity, but because it rests on objective laws of social development that operate globally wherever capitalism exists. This point was already clear to Engels, who repeatedly stressed that socialism is not a moral doctrine or a national tradition but the scientific outcome of material analysis. In Socialism: Utopian and Scientific, Engels insisted that Marxism arose not from abstract ideals but from “the material conditions of life,” and that its conclusions follow necessarily from the development of capitalist production. A science grounded in material conditions cannot be regionally plural in its foundations. Either the laws of motion of capitalism exist, or they do not. If they exist, then Marxism, as their scientific expression, must be theoretically unified. Marx and Engels did not present Marxism as a “European interpretation” of society. They formulated a materialist conception of history grounded in modes of production, class relations, and exploitation. These are not regional phenomena. Capitalism, once established as a world system, imposes its laws universally, albeit in uneven and contradictory forms. Marx’s stated aim in Capital was to uncover “the economic law of motion of modern society.” A law of motion is not culturally relative; it applies wherever the social relations it describes prevail. To speak of multiple Marxisms is therefore to imply multiple capitalisms governed by fundamentally different logics, an implication that collapses under any serious analysis of the world market.

Charity Is No Substitute for Economic Rights
For many years, my home state of Indiana provided very limited access to Medicaid, a deadly state of affairs that still exists in the ten states that have stubbornly refused to accept Affordable Care Act funds to expand the program. For many Medicaid applicants in those settings, their only path to health care is meeting an onerous standard for proving they are disabled. When residents of our state still faced that hurdle, our law school clinic often represented clients in appeals of Medicaid denials. They had severe illnesses and limitations, but their applications for help paying for prescribed medicine and care had been rejected by the state agency. Once one of my colleagues helped a woman pull together reams of evidence about her chronic pain and her struggles to afford medication and therapy. Together, they presented it to a judge who was hearing the appeal of the state agency’s decision denying her Medicaid. The judge somewhat impatiently listened to all of the testimony, then promptly denied her request. The woman rushed from the courtroom in tears. Her lawyer started packing up his files. The judge lingered for a moment and broke from his stoic demeanor. “It really is too bad what she is going through,” he said to my colleague. “Isn’t there some kind of program out there to help people like her?” Since he had just blocked her access to the government program designed to help her, it was clear the judge was referring to a charity program. The answer was no. This woman, like millions of others, was in need of years of assistance with expensive medicines, provider visits, and procedures. Virtually no charity provides that level of support. But the judge is just one of many people in the United States who assume there must be a “program out there,” a charity that will meet the needs of those struggling to get by.

John Reed Ten Days that Shook the World: Chapter IV The Fall of the Provisional Government
WEDNESDAY, November 7th, I rose very late. The noon cannon boomed from Peter-Paul as I went down the Nevsky. It was a raw, chill day. In front of the State Bank some soldiers with fixed bayonets were standing at the closed gates. “What side do you belong to?” I asked. “The Government?” “No more Government,” one answered with a grin, “Slava Bogu! Glory to God!” That was all I could get out of him…. The street-cars were running on the Nevsky, men, women and small boys hanging on every projection. Shops were open, and there seemed even less uneasiness among the street crowds than there had been the day before. A whole crop of new appeals against insurrection had blossomed out on the walls during the night – to the peasants, to the soldiers at the front, to the workmen of Petrograd. One read: FROM THE PETROGRAD MUNICIPAL DUMA: The Municipal Duma informs the citizens that in the extraordinary meeting of November 6th the Duma formed a Committee of Public Safety, composed of members of the Central and Ward Dumas, and representatives of the following revolutionary democratic organizations: The Tsay-ee-kah, the All-Russian Executive Committee of Peasant Deputies, the Army organisations, the Tsentroflot, the Petrograd Soviet of Workers’ and Soldiers’ Deputies (!), the Council of Trade Unions, and others. Members of the Committee of Public Safety will be on duty in the building of the Municipal Duma. Telephones No. 15-40, 223-77, 138-36. November 7th, 1917.
Though I didn’t realize it then, this was the Duma’s declaration of war against the Bolsheviki.
