Argentina approves labour Bill as thousands take to street in opposition
ARGENTINA’S Senate approved a labour law overhaul crucial to President Javier Milei’s shock therapy programme yesterday, after hours of debate unfolded alongside mass protests outside Congress. Thousands of workers mobilised by trade unions converged on Congress on Wednesday, blocking traffic and clashing with police. Security forces fired water cannons and rubber bullets as some protesters lobbed rocks and Molotov cocktails — authorities said they made at least 15 arrests.

Ecuador military accused of restricting press access; HRW condemn
According to that report, the head of the Joint Command of Ecuador’s armed forces, Henry Delgado, would have instructed commanders on Jan. 28 to evaluate journalists for any coverage and to avoid accrediting outlets and communicators whose position, in his view, could damage the institution’s image. Goebertus said the measures “filter media by editorial line, punish criticism, seek to control public discourse and censor the press,” and described them as practices typical of institutions that “fear public scrutiny.”

Chile impunity fears as riot officer who blinded protester walks free
After a 14-month trial, a Santiago court delivered its unanimous verdict last month that Crespo shot and blinded Gatica – but absolved him of any wrongdoing, invoking the principle of legitimate defence. “I am not happy with the outcome,” Gatica told the media outside the courthouse. “I think that it is relevant for the good of democracy that these cases do not result in impunity.”

Lufthansa flights in Germany grounded in strike actions
Lufthansa said the industrial actions, called by the Vereinigung Cockpit and UFO unions, had led to extensive cancellations, but did not give a specific figure. The two unions had called for the 24-hour walkouts on Tuesday. Vereinigung Cockpit downed tools on flights departing from Germany as part of a dispute over the pension system for pilots at the airline and its Lufthansa Cargo unit.

Italian PM vows to secure borders and approves bill allowing naval blockades
The bill is the latest step in the crackdown on irregular immigration by Giorgia Meloni’s far-right government, which has included tough measures against charity rescue ships, harsher jail terms for human smugglers and schemes aimed at swiftly repatriating people.

Ministers ‘betray’ NHS workers with below-inflation pay award, unions say
More than 1.4 million NHS nurses, paramedics, midwives and hospital porters will be left worse off by the “act of political cowardice and financial betrayal of NHS workers,” said Unite. The government imposed the pay award recommended by the discredited Pay Review Body (PRB) process which most health unions boycotted in favour of direct talks with the government last September.

Corbyn alleges UK ‘complicity’ after Streeting’s admission of Gaza abuses
In the trove of messages published by Sky News on Monday – meant to show transparency over Streeting’s own ties to Mandelson – the health secretary argued last year in favour of recognising Palestine as a state. “Morally and politically, I think we need to join France,” Streeting wrote in July 2025. “Morally, because Israel is committing war crimes before our eyes. Their government talks the language of ethnic cleansing and I have met with our own medics out there who describe the most chilling and distressing scenes of calculated brutality against women and children.”

Israeli president ends a fraught Australia visit to comfort Jews as Gaza war protests follow
Authorities estimated 10,000 protesters shut down several downtown Melbourne streets with a rally Thursday evening as Herzog left the country. The largest protest of his visit was mostly peaceful, with only a single demonstrator facing a charge of assaulting a police officer, a police statement said. Earlier, Herzog challenged protesters to target Iran, which he described as an “empire of evil” that had killed tens of thousands of its own citizens.

300 million on the streets in a historic national strike in India
One of the major demands of the strike was the withdrawal of the trade deals India has recently agreed to with the US and the EU. The CTUs, SKM, and left parties in India have called the deals a surrender of the country’s sovereignty and harmful to the interests of the millions of farmers in the country as they allow open access of Indian markets to foreign farm products. Another key demand was the withdrawal of the four new labor codes brought by the Modi government despite long term opposition by the trade unions, and withdrawal of a new rural employment guarantee act called the VB GRAM G Act.

US antitrust chief Gail Slater ousted from Trump justice department
Her defenestration followed a strained relationship with the attorney general, Pam Bondi, who had reiterated to the White House in recent weeks that their differences over the direction and management of the division were irreconcilable. Slater also found herself isolated outside the department, most notably with JD Vance – once her most powerful ally – who grew weary of hearing complaints that Slater had invoked his name, one of the people said.

DHS shutdown imminent as Senate leaves town without deal
Despite two weeks of negotiating, Democrats said Thursday that they were no closer to a deal with Republicans to avert a shutdown. Democratic leaders are demanding reforms to ICE. The standoff over funding for DHS started after a string of federal law enforcement shootings in U.S. cities this year, particularly the killing of two American citizens in Minneapolis in January.

Trump revokes US scientific finding behind climate change regulations
“On the contrary, over the generations, fossil fuels have saved millions of lives and lifted billions of people out of poverty all over the world,” Trump said at a White House ceremony on Thursday. He hailed the repeal of the endangerment finding as “the single largest deregulatory action in American history, by far”. EPA administrator Lee Zeldin, who also attended the ceremony, described the endangerment finding as “the Holy Grail of federal regulatory overreach”.

All Charges Against Baki Have Been Dropped!
The trial was supposed to last until the evening. But on Tuesday, Baki Devrimkaya emerged from Berlin’s Regional Court before noon, where he was greeted by dozens of supporters with banners and chants. The case had been dismissed—resulting in neither a guilty nor a not guilty verdict. Instead, the charges will disappear in exchange for a €450 donation to medico international, an NGO that opposes the genocide in Gaza. Back in December 2023, Baki had been a steward at a pro-Palestinian protest at the Free University of Berlin. Right-wing agitators attempted to disrupt the event by destroying posters featuring images of murdered Palestinian children, insulting students as “Nazis,” and physically attacking stewards. Multiple videos show Baki standing in front of these bullies, remaining peaceful even as they shoved him. Absurdly, Baki was charged with “assault” and “insult.” At a first trial last June, these charges had to be dropped as the evidence showed the opposite: Baki was the one being assaulted and insulted. Instead, the judge convicted Baki of “coercion” for standing in front of a person with outstretched arms for about 50 seconds. He was sentenced to a €450 fine. This would create a dangerous and bizarre legal precedent, potentially criminalizing every form of stewarding at left-wing events. Baki appealed the charges, and yesterday his three lawyers were able to get the coercion charge dropped as well. The right-wing paper Tagespiegel is lying when it claims in a headline that Baki was sentenced to a fine—there was no determination of guilt.

Majority want major shift left– but can the opportunity be seized?
AS THE Westminster political crisis unfolds, the hopes and fears of the capitalist class were spelt out plainly in two separate articles in The Telegraph, appearing on the same day this week. The first was headlined “Why bond markets may be Starmer’s closest friend.” The Prime Minister has indeed run out of others. The article’s argument was simple. The international money markets will rally to try to save Britain’s useless premier. The omnipotent markets threw a wobbly when Rachel Reeves burst into tears at Prime Minister’s Questions last year, and they grow visibly restless every time Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham raises an eyebrow or another Downing Street functionary is carried out of No 10 feet first. And, of course, they went into meltdown when Tory Party members imposed the apparently deranged Liz Truss on the country as premier and, together with chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, started to drive a coach-and-horses through their idea of fiscal probity. And when the money markets take fright they can rapidly increase the cost of borrowing, which is more than enough to terrify most leaders, no matter how large their mandate from the people. What are they afraid of today? As per the Telegraph that “Sir Keir’s exit might invite political chaos, a power vacuum, left-wing fiscal profligacy or all of the above.”

In Search of Russia’s Lost Opposition
”Please check with each participant whether it’s okay to take their photo.” After I take a picture of a slide during one of the presentations, a man approaches me. It’s Mikhail Lobanov, a Russian socialist, who kindly reminds me that this is one of the panels where the speakers aren’t to be made public. I reassure him that I’d never publish anything without consent. Mikhail accepts with a smile and returns to his seat. I have been invited to “The Fight against Russia’s war and the authoritarian regime,” a conference organized by Radical Democracy Network, a broad coalition of Russian dissidents and antiwar activists. The organizers make it clear that this is no ordinary gathering. Flyers inform attendees that we are not allowed to publicize anything about today’s event for security reasons. A five-day blackout is imposed on all media articles. It’s about preventing Russian intelligence from tracking and mapping the guests’ activity — but also to stay under the radar of the Danish police. The guests are often treated with suspicion by Western security services. This understandable concern also reminds the other participants of the duress under which the Russian activists live. Two of today’s featured speakers are introduced with a reminder not to film or mention any names, as it might jeopardize their networks in Russia. Many Russians present already appear on their government’s list of “extremists who are a threat to national security.”
