I keep hearing people criticise Marxists for being "Althusserians" but I don't quite understand what that entails. What about Althusser is so controversial? What book of his should I read first to understand his contribution (or lack of contribution) to Marxism? And also is there a good polemic against him.

Something about him fabulating marx's supposed epistemic break with his younger hegelian self, thus upholding an anglofied, analytical strain of marxism

Ye pretty much. Alth heavily dislikes what he calls "hegelianisms" in Marx's writings and people who are into Hegel aren't too happy with that.

His main work is his reading of capital. For Marx is a good starting point though.

Althusser invests a lot of effort in finding a break in the discourse of the young and the "mature" marx yes, but his framing is entirely different. It's about a humanistic strain in works like The German Ideology, seemingly influenced by Feuerbach, giving rise to concepts like spiritual alienation, then being largely foregone in later works.

The novel theoretical concepts of Althusser cannot be described as "analytic" in good faith. They are descended from his structuralist contemporaries, yet represent an attempted restatement of dialectics within a purely materialist framework. It should by no means be conflated with "anti-dialectics":
>Let us say, to end this ever-extended textual exposition, that if the Marxistt dialectic is 'in principle' the opposite of the Hegelian dialectic, if it is rational and not mystical-mystified-mystiificatory, this radical distinction must be manifest in its essence, that is, in its characteristic determinations and structures. To be clear, this means that basic structures of the Hegelian dialectic, such as negation, the negation of the negation, the identity of opposites, 'supersession', the transformation of quantity into quality, contradiction, etc. have for Marx (in so far as he takes them over, and he takes over by no means all of them) a structure different from the structure they have for Hegel). It also means that these structural differences can be demonstrated, described, determined and thought. And if this is possible, it is therefore necessary, I would go so far as to say vital, for Marxism. We cannot go on reiterating indefinitely approximations such as the difference between systems and method, the inversion of philosophy or dialetic, the extraction of the 'rational kernel', and so on, without letting these formulae think for us, that is, stop thinking ourselves and trust ourselves to the magic of a number of completion of Marx's work. I say vital, for I am convinced that the philosophical development of Marxism currently depends on this task.
The above is directly followed by a footnote positively referencing Mao's On Contradiction!

Reminder: analytical philosophy is full of dumb bullshit but continental philosophy is the vibe coding of philosophy.

Maybe the answer is stop doing philosophy period, it’s all just mental masturbation anyway, at least real masturbation feels good

>>2694673
"Real" masturbation also stimulates the mind, however. We have a false dichotomy here.

>>2694682
No it doesn’t, jacking off makes you dumber, not smarter, it’s like alcohol

>>2694664
Well it's strange that Marx never bothered to retract anything about any of his earlier hegelian shit even in passing, even in private letters

Yet him and engels went to great pains to clarify that their earlier framing of workers selling their labour for wages was incorrect as Marx's understanding of capitalism matured, to the point where they added clarifications, retractions and alterations to Wage Labour and Capital, a work roughly contemporaneous with The German Ideology, that what workers actually sell their labour-power.

>>2694664
Thanks I will read that now. I think I agree with him though I will have to read more. Cerainly I don't understand what is so controversial about this.

>>2694689
>retract anything about any of his earlier hegelian shit
The argument is not so much, that the young marx was factually incorrect. It's that he hadn't yet arrived at the kind of critical focus, with which Capital dissected commodity production. Alienation is go-to example, because it is virtually absent from Marx's later writing, while being a fairly popular way to criticize the soviet union among vulgar marxistss.

Dopamine is a stimulant

So is cocaine and amphetamine, doesn’t make them good for you

>>2694774
I mean he could've mentioned in passing "lol that alienation shit was kinda cringe in retrospect, I was on edibles when I wrote that shit, sorry lads"

>>2694826
Why would he? If Althusser was right, Marx wouldn't have had to, because alienation and the imperative to return to more "authentic" relations of production would be inherently foreign and irrelevant to any of the theoretical work starting with Capital. It would be like if Caesar, after crossing the Rubicon, had explained in detail, why it was not a necessity to continue the campaign against Gaul, at that time.
