Sudan’s ‘lion cubs’: The child soldiers going viral on TikTok
Many of the videos reviewed show the children in military uniforms posing with fighters and senior officials from both sides of the conflict—the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). They are seen celebrating battlefield victories, delivering motivational speeches, and making violent threats. In some footage the children are armed. Child soldier experts told Bellingcat that the visibility and popularity of this content, which portrays fighting as normal, celebrated, and aspirational, could lead to the recruitment of more young people in the conflict.

Prosecutor General of Brazil Opposes Bolsonaro’s House Arrest Bid
Last week, defense attorneys for the former far-right president filed a request seeking to transfer Jair Bolsonaro to house arrest over health concerns. Bolsonaro has been detained since January 15 at a police facility designated for prisoners under special custody, located within a penitentiary complex. Gonet based his opinion on a medical report from the Federal Police, which concluded that the chronic diseases Bolsonaro suffers from are under clinical and medicinal control, and that it is not necessary to transfer him to a hospital at the moment.

US Department of Labor reports 5,070 US workers killed on the job in 2024

Barab notes, “The job safety budget is just $3.68 per worker,” adding, “If budgets are the monetary expression of an organization’s values, Trump’s message to workers is: Drop dead.”

Cuban man’s death at El Paso tent camp was result of “spontaneous use of force,” ICE says
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials this week reported that the death of a 55-year-old Cuban man at a detention facility in El Paso was the result of the staff’s “spontaneous use of force” to “prevent him from harming himself.” Officials quietly updated the cause of death after previously declaring last month that the man died of “medical distress.”

Hundreds of students suspended, schools under close watch over anti-ICE walkouts
Such anti-ICE or “ICE out” walkouts have increasingly popped up after Renee Good and Alex Pretti were shot and killed by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis last month. But experts say leaving school grounds is not a form of protest protected under the First Amendment for students, and Republican leaders are warning of consequences for those who participate.

Thousands of Minnesotans to be kicked off SNAP due to new eligibility requirements
The newly expanded SNAP work requirements and the elimination of several exemptions are a part of the “One Big Beautiful Bill” passed by Republicans in Congress and signed into law by President Donald Trump in July. In addition to increasing the age for able bodied adults to work from 54 to 64, the law eliminates exemptions for veterans, people experiencing homelessness, young adults aging out of foster care, and parents and caregivers with children between the ages of 14 and 18.

A memo from last year – obtained by the ABC7 On Your Side Investigates team through a public records request – outlines how LAFD was planning to handle the media in anticipation of the release of the after-action report. DIANE ABBOTT: The priority should be a plan for growth
THERE are widespread reports that the Chancellor Rachel Reeves will not introduce any tax or spend measures in the Spring Statement on March 3. This would be a mistake. The G7 economies are struggling and the British economy is among the worst. We are effectively stagnating, and unemployment is rising. This is no time for passivity. The economy is failing to deliver for the population, while the turmoil in British politics reflects that. Of course, any commitment not to make things worse for workers and the poor would be welcome. Doing nothing would be an improvement on the last two Reeves’s Budgets, which deepened the austerity that the Tories had bequeathed. It is amazing to me that it is ever disputed that this government has implemented austerity. This was the government that carried out the stealth tax of freezing income tax thresholds, raised energy prices and fares, pushed council tax higher and imposed sub-inflation pay rises in the public sector.

Israel’s Economy Has Problems, but It’s Not Collapsing Yet
In the last quarter of 2023, Israel was simultaneously reeling from the shock and trauma of the October 7 Hamas attack on the cities and kibbutzim of the Gaza Envelope and mobilizing for a campaign of revenge and retaliation. Over 200,000 Israelis were evacuated from communities bordering the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, and some 300,000 reservists were mobilized. In the following months, the Israeli economy was dislocated. Consumer spending, imports, and exports declined dramatically. Ultimately, nearly 50,000 businesses went bankrupt. Meanwhile, Israel’s global brand is in the trash can. Its genocidal campaign in Gaza put it in bad odor among progressive circles worldwide and across much of the Global South. But the economic disruption that Israel has experienced to date has been manageable for its leaders.

Ten Days that Shook the World by John Reed Chapter VI The Committee for Salvation
Beside my door when I came down in the morning were posted two new orders of the Military Revolutionary Committee, directing that all shops and stores should open as usual, and that all empty rooms and apartments should be put at the disposal of the Committee…. For thirty-six hours now the Bolsheviki had been cut off from provincial Russia and the outside world. The railway men and telegraphers refused to transmit their despatches, the postmen would not handle their mail. Only the Government wireless at Tsarskoye Selo launched half-hourly bulletins and manifestoes to the four corners of heaven; the Commissars of Smolny raced the Commissars of the City Duma on speeding trains half across the earth; and two aeroplanes, laden with propaganda, fled high up toward the Front…. But the eddies of insurrection were spreading through Russia with a swiftness surpassing any human agency. Helsingfors Soviet passed resolutions of support; Kiev Bolsheviki captured the arsenal and the telegraph station, only to be driven out by delegates to the Congress of Cossacks, which happened to be meeting there; in Kazan, a Military Revolutionary Committee arrested the local garrison staff and the Commissar of the Provisional Government; from far Krasnoyarsk, in Siberia, came news that the Soviets were in control of the Municipal institutions; at Moscow, where the situation was aggravated by a great strike of leather-workers on one side, and a threat of general lock-out on the other, the Soviets had voted overwhelmingly to support the action of the Bolsheviki in Petrograd…. Already a Military Revolutionary Committee was functioning. Everywhere the same thing happened. The common soldiers and the industrial workers supported the Soviets by a vast majority; the officers, yunkers and middle class generally were on the side of the Government—as were the bourgeois Cadets and the “moderate” Socialist parties. In all these towns sprang up Committees for Salvation of Country and Revolution, arming for civil war….
Vast Russia was in a state of solution. As long ago as 1905 the process had begun; the March Revolution had merely hastened it, and giving birth to a sort of forecast of the new order, had ended by merely perpetuating the hollow structure of the old regime. Now, however, the Bolsheviki, in one night, had dissipated it, as one blows away smoke. Old Russia was no more; human society flowed molten in primal heat, and from the tossing sea of flame was emerging the class struggle, stark and pitiless—and the fragile, slowly-cooling crust of new planets….
