We are in the midst of a cognitive apocalypse. People are getting too stupid to think for themselves, to govern themselves, to do anything for themselves. Overstimulation and over-externalization via digital media is causing brains to atrophy, our memory is getting worse, our attention spans are getting shorter, and our ability to think critically and apply internal reasoning is becoming nonexistent. As a result of this cognitive decline, nations all over the world are regressing into authoritarianism as the global populace becomes weaker and loses their mental defenses, their ability to discern truth from fiction, their ability to think independently or be proactive or participate in complex collective action.
You can see examples of this in everyday life. Doing something as simple as cooking a pot of soup from scratch or replacing spark plugs on your car engine is enough to make the average person look at you like you're some kind of wizard - things that used to be common knowledge are becoming arcane lost arts, people are so helpless now that they don't even try to think about what to do in a crisis, they just immediately defer to search engines or AI chatbots to answer all their questions.
And it's not because of some bullshit explanation like eugenics and birth rates, as described in the film Idiocracy - it's got absolutely nothing to do with genetics, it has to do with overexposure to outside information. It's like in the Jetsons where they are incapable of walking anywhere because they're so accustomed to standing on conveyor belts, only instead of our legs it's our brains that are going soft and losing the ability to perform work under their own power. This is all by design, this is what fascist leaders and advertising executives and other kinds of domineering authority figures want, a population of mindless reactive insects who only know to do what they are told and consume what they are given.
