Its down 6 percent on opening, which might just be contained to japan but as its the first stock market to open it might be more widespread. any idea what might have sparked this?

Things are really bad right now, tens of millions of farmers across South Asia can't afford artificial fertilizers right before the sowing season. Next to the oil price spike (including derivatives) and the sulfur supply chain (including industrial hydrosulfuric acid), tied into the fallout is the global food supply. Food prices are about to increase dramatically which will cause major Arab-spring style events very soon.
