Colombia Supreme Court sentences far-right senator to 23 years in prison for corruption
According to the court, Ramirez led a criminal organization made up of government officials and State contractors that embezzled infrastructure funds and guaranteed no-show contracts for the Senator’s corporate sponsors. The court found that the senator secured multiple National Planning Department (DNP) contracts with construction firms, for which he received kickbacks worth 10% of the value of the contracts.

Mexico will uphold Cuban doctor agreement as other countries take fright
MEXICO will continue to have Cuban doctors work in the country, President Claudia Sheinbaum has said, as other nations across the Americas have ditched their agreements with Cuba’s government under US pressure. Ms Sheinbaum praised Cuban doctors who often work in underserved rural areas under a medical aid programme, saying: “It’s a bilateral agreement that helps Mexico a lot.”

El Salvador Approves Life Sentences for Minors
The reforms to those laws were approved one week after lawmakers passed a constitutional amendment allowing “fast-track” changes to the Constitution, meaning reforms can be implemented within the same legislative period. The reform to the Juvenile Criminal Law establishes that minors may be subject to life imprisonment, which may be periodically reviewed or evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Criminal Code.

Guns in the streets as US, Israel intensify month-long attacks across Iran
Washington has also deployed thousands more soldiers to the region while signalling that an attempt to occupy one or more islands on Iran’s southern shores may be imminent. Iranian officials have promised to retaliate strongly if that happens, including by striking critical infrastructure across the region. Javad Mogoei, a prominent IRGC-linked media personality, released a video from the island of Qeshm earlier this week, suggesting that the IRGC could launch missiles and drones at Iranian islands if they were occupied by the US.

In Thailand’s rice paddies, rising petrol prices spell chaos for farmers
The Thai government says it has enough energy for 100 days, but still, in many areas of the country, long queues and “out of stock” signs have appeared at the pumps. The shortages have prompted large taxis to reduce services from Bangkok’s main airport, caused tour boats to stop and even prompted some temples to halt cremations.

Trump EPA relied on industry science to weaken formaldehyde cancer rules, documents show
The newly released documents show the industry and the Trump EPA’s scientific justification for weakening the protections largely relied on, or aligned with, a small number of studies led by a chemical industry scientist, Rory Conolly, who argued that some exposure to formaldehyde is safe. The Conolly studies were funded by chemical trade groups. Between 2008 and 2024, the EPA had concluded the research was out of date or unreliable, documents show.

Connecticut officer fired after shooting man in mental health crisis as others tried to de-escalate
“In the body-worn camera footage of the incident, as well as publicly shared videos, I saw three officers work together as a team to de-escalate a mental health crisis in a way that exemplifies the best of our police department,” Arulampalam said. “The actions of Officer Magnano do not measure up to those standards.”

assembly.org.ua : The war has entered its fifth year. On the intensification of street guerrilla in Ukraine
For nearly 1,500 days and nights, the shadow of death has swirled over our Slobozhanshchina, and the sickle of warfare has reaped the harvest of life. Despite the predictions of the front's collapse last year—some with fear, others with hope that everyone would finally be able to leave—it still stands near Volchansk, Chasov Yar, Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk), and Gulyaipole. The deadline for a hypothetical agreement has been pushed back again to late spring. No threats of sanctions against the Kiev authorities from the Trump’s fascist administration, which proudly admits to raping children if it was "a very good deal that will help them become great." The UN is also in no hurry to install a temporary administration under its auspices in Ukraine, modeled on East Timor. The drowning one's salvation remains his own doing. Broad resistance to drafting in Ukraine we recently compared to the resistance to ICE in previous article "From Minneapolis to Ukraine, only street countering can stop the state-run hunt for people". The problem is that, as in the United States, it is not strong enough to change the overall situation. After the complete devastation of our revolutionary field by Stalinism, the tradition of mass street movements disappeared in Ukraine, except in support of some right-wing politicians: 1991, 2004, 2014… Rebuilding it from scratch takes a lot of time and has been underway for two years now, since the law tightening mobilization was adopted on April 11, 2024. However, since late 2025, we see a new trend: people against the war are moving from self-defense to counter-strike. Almost every day there are news reports of armed attacks against police or enlistment groups, mostly in rear regions like Odessa or West Ukraine. This is no longer like today's United States, but rather like during the Vietnam War!

The Kathy Hochul Donors in the Jeffrey Epstein Files
For nearly a year, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has been calling on the Donald Trump administration to release the Jeffrey Epstein files. Well, they’ve been released — and it turns out some of Hochul’s wealthiest donors from recent campaigns are in them. The release of the files, and the fact that some of the richest people who have contributed to her in the past are littered throughout them, puts her in an awkward position. As New York state budget negotiations come to a head, Hochul is steadfastly resisting calls to hike taxes on New York’s ultrarich to fund the universal childcare she has made a core part of her reelection platform. But her refusal to tax the wealthy also undermines her strict condemnation of the very Epstein-linked billionaires she has demanded be exposed — a number of whom have given generously to her.

Yanis Varoufakis & Erik Edman:Europe’s Credibility Is in Tatters Over Iran
Last Monday, following a US strike in southern Iran, former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt posted on X: “Attacking water desalination plants is attacking critical civilian infrastructure. It’s with no doubt a war crime. If this escalates the consequences would be grave”. Of course, the question that arises is not what the “grave consequences” could be, but rather if there is a single human being left on Earth who takes European leaders seriously when they suggest they will hold the US or Israel accountable for, well… anything. Two days later, president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen followed with a statement that said the quiet part out loud. “Europe can no longer be a custodian […] for a world that has gone and will not return,” she wrote, presumably meaning a world that respects international law, and called instead for a “more realistic and interest-driven foreign policy”. Europeans have used their “values” as a brow-beating tool around the planet for decades. The speed with which they have now dropped them makes their hypocrisy and cynicism that much more breathtaking.
