What is the materialist explanation for chuddy alt-tech FOSS nerds like Luke Smith and Bryan Lunduke? Many lolberts and rightoids seem to think that loonix and open-source software is some privacy-protecting alternative to woke big-tech surveillance and censorship. I used to think like this but now I realize how wrong I was.

Disillusionment of the mainstream narrative. Community building. Finding the "secret" ultimate knowledge that in turn makes one superior to others. I think for the same reason right wing mentality takes people to believe in reptilians, go into hardcore math, go into hardcore analytic philosophy, become religious in a religion that's not the common one where they're from (Muslim in a Catholic area) or just very religious in general.

You try to find answers somewhere. Ironically this is what drove me to Marxism and then it helped me realized the pursuit of such was not fruitless but unachievable. There is no "ultimate truth" or the such. Doesn't mean I've shed the desire to find such things. For example, I really wanted to find the One True Programming Language, and this craving has led to a lot of discovery and learning. Politically, trying to find the true interpretation of x or y.

I think you see this in people who seem to describe Marxism as a spiritual force, an immortal science, even proletarian science of liberation or some shit. Of course the people who say that Marxism "is just a tool" haven't really read enough, but also those who see in Marxism an esoteric gospel are a bit lost.

It's easy to lose oneself.

first of all, a materialist explanation would be much harder than just a regular explanation, your shitty thread doesn't deserve that

>FOSS nerds

except they aren't? they like OSS, the free part is always questioned because it is seen as woke. it is no coincidence that it is the part they dismiss (the F) the one that is more inconvenient for the companies these people claim to oppose. of course, their true enemy is the state and the private sector is only bad insofar as they are "accomplices" of the state. like any other libertarian movement, they have an explicit petite bourgeois line "open source and the repudiation of copyright would create more competitive markets" and an implicit lumpen line "it is slightly harder for us middle class criminals to get away with stuff now". their support for anything is flimsy and unreliable and if you ever trust them with your software they will eventually stab you in the back because the only logic they truly follow is opportunism

why are these particular characters popular? the material reason is that their audience is uneducated and easily deceived by conmen. the only video I watched of luke smith was him criticizing stallman, followed by the announce that he was going to start reading thomas aquinas and then a comment about how the word "nature" doesn't just mean trees and grass but how things are supposed to be or would normally be without external influences. this last explanation took him several minutes and was conveyed with the gravitas of invaluable esoteric knowledge, his chat was very impressed. I don't think they have read a full wikipedia article in their lives, let alone a book. I can only blame the education system, them, the internet, and their parents (in that order)

and that's really all you need in the context of a country the us and the minds it has colonized through the internet with an already libertarian mainstream narrative. as a last note, calling them nerds is an overstatement, these people are mostly consumers of the software, not programmers

liberal nonsense. no one gives a shit about community anymore, you are an exception or a liar

I've come to similar conclusions regarding searches for some ultimate truth or higher meaning to the universe all that search will yield is disappointment and delusion. ppl should just come to terms with some ambiguity in their life and stop craving somesort of higher meaning
