Thinking back to my 4chan days, I find it hilarious that I didn’t realize I was mentally ill. Like, retrospectively, I was obviously going through shit but I was convinced that I was somehow fine because I was dealing with it better than the worst 4chan users. Our brains have an interesting way of playing tricks on us. I honestly think this is how most 4chan users are. Like you can’t be sane and actually enjoy being on that site. I was a user from maybe 2014-2017 or 2018.

Even though I was a ~daily 4chan user from age 13 to ~20 I never bought into the racist shit. Ideally you want people to believe they are allowed to stop being reactionaries and that often means they won’t face harsh consequences for being a turncoat either way. You don’t have to ‘reward’ people for it, but social shame is still a punishment. If you wanted everyone to lie about who they used to be they look worse if they were unable to cover it up.
