ultimately it is a relatively minor position for a socialist to have, one that has less wiggle room due to the constant uphill battle against an openly hostile executive, but the important takeaway is not whether zohran is going to do socialism (he objectively wont), but the wide margins with which he won, which represent at least two important shifts in the american electorate: 1) that, insofar as voters in the city goes, there's an open acceptance of terms that used to be complete taboo like 'socialism' and 2) that israel now has little sway over half of the americans, including jewish americans. that's a huge turnaround point in electoral politics. literally 5 years ago it was a no-brainer to get endorsed by J Street or AIPAC, now it's firmly viewed as negative. it's too bad that the US is not a democracy, but at least as a snapshot of where ideologically voters are at, it's a (cautiously) optimistic picture.
