I think it's funny that it’s impossible to find memes cringe in retrospect nowadays. People think about reddit memes they used to laugh at and go 'this is awful, I was so unfunny', but with the post-ironic memes over the last few years it's just 'I never found this funny, and that's funny'.
Some might call it the master morality of humour.

Cringe was a very pavlovian phenomenon, if you don't maintain it since birth you start to lose it.
the desire to communicate in images not mere letters, of creation that was not handed down to us. creations that the contemporary made, not some dumb butt sniffing ancestor from 100k years ago decided would be cool but some nipple toucher 10 years ago. thats the beauty of a meme. it rejects language, by substituting it with a more present language, the meme the image, a context so specific such that you can sense it was made in this period rather than the abstract of so called "letters" and "words" you played no part in shaping, negotiating or establishing the original untouched respected tradition is tarnished and turned into something new to play with with the addition to the image, the meme
