Paper quality is very important, for ink can bleed through your paper, people do spend a lot on fountain pen compatible paper, but if you buy a pen which has nib size 0.5 you will be fine even on 65 GSM paper. If you want cheap exercise books buy something which is manufactured in Vietnam.

>What is the most cutting edge
The Jinhao brand(chinese) have made retractable fountain pens cheaper they used to be made by Japanese brands and were costly, even upto 90 dollar. Buy now they cost literally less than 30 dollars.

I like Pilot G2, retractables of any type, just clicks with me (pun intended).
But again they lack variety, it is a damn shame I don't live in Japan, they have a good variety of Pens and Inks.

Also I like mechanical pencils.

i have a platinum preppy because a book recommended it as a budget option
the nib is "medium"
i should buy the one with a fine nib sometime, so i can get a feel for which are the best for handwriting
