For Marx, the proletariat was the immiserated, moneyless, propertyless, subsistence wage worker with no social democratic protections whatsoever. His wage covered exactly his expenses so even by practicing abstinence and avoiding alcohol, he could not escape relative poverty. The 19th century proletariat was a completely different beast than the developed middle class of countries like the US and China who won concessions and can pretty much easily save and invest as long as they aren't addicted to something or have too many kids.
