how many communists are people who actually understand dialectical materialism, the movement of history and class relationships vs how many are just people who can't have success in this model of production and therefore are resentful.

Considering how marginalised communism is in western world, I am guessing actually most people who identify as such are intellectuals (in colloquial sense). There is no bandwagon which could swoop you, you get to it through books.
And obviously its going to be populated by people who failed to make it in current system, why would you want to change things if they are already working out fine for you. That isnt even unique to communism, thats just how political movements work.
