Simplistically, ontology is inquiry about what "fundamentally" exists. Is it Platonic forms, is it Leibnizian monads, is everything just matter or is there another type of thing, do facts exist, etc. To say something is so "ontologically" is (or should be) to say that it is so at the most fundamental level.
