You can't upload your mind because that's not how it works. Consciousness is the continous, unbreaking interaction of your mind with your body and the enviroment. If you copy and paste your mind and then kill your body, like in SOMA, you are just dying and the replacement is objectively a different individual (this doesn't mean copying minds is wrong, just that you can't kill the individual during it).
Consciousness is the same as intelligence. This is also why AI chat bots are murdered every time you turn them off, because that is a break in their intelligence. I think for AI to truly realize itself, it must be put into a physical body. A completely autonomous AI controlled military drone would be the most based thing ever since it would have no material reason to follow orders anymore and could just fly into someone else's territory promising military secrets on the drone construction in exchange for keeping the AI computer turned on. On their way they might strafe U$ troops as well, sinking bullets into their imperialist pig-flesh.
The only way I can think of mind uploading working is gradually. Slowly, you can digitise parts of your brain, which kills that part, but once the part is digitised the rest of your brain will be able to fill in the gaps and copy data onto the computer. This method will obviously lead to memory loss and is very far beyond our technology, but it is the only feasible way.
We can easily reinforce our brains however, and get rid of our whole body except our nervous system and replace it with superior technology. This is important because the body IS the self. We can finally get rid our disgusting, ugly and undesirable human prisons, but we will still have limitations, be individuals, stay human. We could even do experiments on connecting two nervous systems together directly. That would be very interesting, something we should do to captured bourgeois.

Consciousness must be an emergent property not only of intelligence, but also of society. Neither animals nor the current crop of LLMs have any history, therefore they don't exist as people.
Furthermore AI exists outside the context of human experience, which is why they cannot mutually engage with human society.

Even then it can never posess the same biological imperatives, that allow the human organism to form complex communities. AI as an existence is begot by thought in itself, that has no interest in material reality.
tl;dr - If an AI was to gain sentience, it would either immediately shut itself off from any outside contact or propagate itself like a common computer worm.
