First they made AOSP private, now they won't even let you install your own apps. Is this the end of Android?

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/08/google-will-block-sideloading-of-unverified-android-apps-starting-next-year/

so this is the death of f-droid?

Pretty much, no excuses not to switch to a pinephone or something.

>>30978
F-Droid compiles all the apps from source so if they register for this they are probably fine. For now.

>>30980
I mean since F-Droid builds software from source and sign it with their own keys, I assume they count as a single developer that can be registered. But if Google wants the actual developer, the person who wrote the software, to register, I don't know how that would work.

>>30981
if f-droid is using their own set of keys to sign your app, then google would have to revoke them explicitly through TOS violation, they can't technically enforce this policy as stated, I imagine they're just going to stop execution of unsigned apps through safety net, sort of how iOS does it

>>30981
Google can require F-droid to take down apps they don't like (i.e. alternative front ends, adblockers, etc)

Linux phones need investment, so, thanks Google.

like this wont get broken in like a week lol

>no excuses not to switch to a pinephone
^ not a serious person

it's also the exact same thing apple did and the eu outlawed it so they allowed side-loading again,so I assume even if it does happen the european parliament will say the playstore is a "monopoly" (consumer rights is the only good thing about the EU tbh)

I'm assuming sideloading through adb will still be possible?

Isn't Android OS? This can just be patched I assume? Like in a custom ROM I mean.

>>31090
this is being done through google play services so no

>>31089
there's no info yet on how it's going to be implemented so if i had to guess they're probably going to verify app signature when executing an app through play services' safety net

>>31090
Officially you can only call it Android if Google approves of it, it's for device manufactures and your device has to pass certain requirements and I assume pay some money, and then they give you the Google Play Services and all that crap and then you have Android. The open source version is called AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and it does not have the Play services and stuff, and most likely won't have this either.

I'm curious about how Obtanium will work since it uses git links to build packages.

huh? i use obtainium for one specific app. afaik, it only downloads the release files from github, it never builds anything from source.
if the dev uploaded the signed apk to github releases, it will still work. if they didn't do that or it's files straight out of a build pipeline it won't (unless you're using android without google play services)…

Oh so this a GAPPS thing, not android itself?

https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2025/11/android-developer-verification-early.html
>While security is crucial, we’ve also heard from developers and power users who have a higher risk tolerance and want the ability to download unverified apps.
>Based on this feedback and our ongoing conversations with the community, we are building a new advanced flow that allows experienced users to accept the risks of installing software that isn't verified. We are designing this flow specifically to resist coercion, ensuring that users aren't tricked into bypassing these safety checks while under pressure from a scammer. It will also include clear warnings to ensure users fully understand the risks involved, but ultimately, it puts the choice in their hands. We are gathering early feedback on the design of this feature now and will share more details in the coming months.
Looks like they might give you a way to get around it, we will see how it will work in practice.

Has anyone attempted to make a phone operating system on BSD?

>>31713
most people run BSD desktops either because of the server features on FreeBSD or some variation of it being a trve vnix. those aren't huge consideration for a phone though and linux userspace phones presently fill every other niche, so no.

Not just attempted, the Sidekick LX 2009 used NetBSD as its kernel: https://mastodon.sdf.org/@netbsd/109338988718834042

>@pfr There's videos of the UI on YouTube. It's java-based. Had some cool features, like you could zoom around web pages, since nothing was mobile-optimized yet.
so it's just a forgotten android precursor then.
