AKs are good, but ARs are cheaper, more reliable, easier to repair, and easier to arm and equip, train with, EVERYTHING.
Friends don't let Friends train with they can't afford to maintain. Get them on a deal/sale and get your preferences sorted on the cheap, get good ammo.
