>>29620>he had these right wing views for decadesI mean, didn't he say something along the lines of "it was more about just wanting to see the system destroyed than any specific worldview" regarding his Zenkyoto days? I suspect it may have been similar with some other guys from that generation

others were more radical about it at the time. I'm not sure where this "Oshii's work was always turbo leftist" meme comes from beyond a desire to "claim" creators for internet argument points (similar to right-wingers saying K-On is "on their side" or whatever). I've seen multiple people jump through hoops to maintain Oshii's fandom status as a "valuable progressive ally" and suddenly go "well actually very possible to have his chud gamer views on PC culture & still be a leftist". Mind you I think it's true and there are people who still maintain more fundamental left-wing views while saying stuff like that… but not only is Oshii not one of them, this usually comes from people who'd usually never tolerate such comments unless for the purpose of defending a conclusion "the community" already came to.
>im not surprised his first time ever attending a government meeting was sanae takaichiWhat about Takashi Murakami, though? He was the other guy at the meeting who's relevant to anime and he doesn't strike me as a partisan right winger. For the record I know some people think takes like "Yoshinori Kanada's fire dragon has roots in classic Japanese art, like Hokusai's Fine Wind, Clear Morning" are nationalistic & right wing but 1. Isao Takahata had similar takes regarding manga's roots in old Japanese prints and he was a lifelong leftist and 2. thinking the idea that Japan has a culture is "dangerous nationalism" is silly neurotic idpol - especially since the retort from American academics & people like Eiji Otsuka tends to be "no, manga/anime were actually inspired by the Americans and Soviets" and from a left-wing perspective, giving America so much credit should be equally "problematic" (mind you it's all of those - they had their own cultural history of telling stories through art & mixed it with western influence like American comic paneling and soviet montage theory etc).
