Uh huh

oshii's brain is definitely melting if this is the sort of thing he's saying now, dude's been a fairly straightforward leftoid in the past

>>25826
In the past past for sure, but he's been making right-wing statements for the past 2 decades now

>>25827
Wow, for that long?

Shame, Angel's Egg and Patlabor 2 are two of my favorite movies.

Young Oshii would never support military spending, Old Oshii blames marxists for japans decline in military research and lack of spending. Two very different ppl, wouldn't let it spoil his works

Surely these things have nothing to do with each other

Not too unusual for people involved with the showa new left to get more right wing over time; one of the main guys in Ryu Ota's far-left anti-Japaneseism circles (way more extreme than Oshii was) supported visiting Yasukuni Shrine later since "the right shouldn't monopolize it" https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%B9%B3%E5%B2%A1%E6%AD%A3%E6%98%8E (and Ota himself became a "jews are lizards" guy). Then you have Yasuhiko Yoshikazu:
>His final message addresses Japanese youth participating protests against the recent security bill, which will allow the reinterpretation of Japan's Peace Constitution as well as the military aid of foreign countries in wartime. While he congratulates them on protesting peacefully, he says, "It's a shame if they are caught up in a single-minded pursuit of ideas such as 'protect (war-renouncing) Article 9 (of the Constitution)' and 'preserve (Japan as) a peaceful country.' For example, I hope they think for themselves from now on about how we deal with things like the Islamic State extremist group."

Honestly I'd unquestionably respect people like Oshii if they kept their views from back then but just criticized modern trendy idpol & hyper-sensitivity culture (not just Oshii, I know Yasuhiko criticized modern feminism) but "disillusionment with the left" tends to result in dumb neocon stuff too like that quote above

What I realized is that it's hard for people to really hold on to their own individual sociopolitical values without falling into generic "I think this so I must also think this other thing" means of thinking and when they do they can have detached antisocial tendencies that result in immoral behavior ex. Yamamoto Yohane's sex pesting

I always thought it was funny that he criticized Miyazaki's stuff for being plotless or whatever. Dude made Angel's Egg and is saying a bunch of movies for kids don't have an obvious enough narrative? I'm pretty sure he's also the only source people have for Miyazaki supposedly being a pedo. Between this and his political statements you'd think Oshii made a desperate late-career pivot to pander to certain kinds of right-wing weebs (obviously I'm not saying he actually did, just that he acts like it)

>>29611
IIRC miyazaki actually made some really creepy jokes in the past that someone translated but I sadly lost the link and have not managed to find it again. but some stuff he said about (I think) Kiki that's easier to find certainly makes him sound like a loli guy

I don't think right wing weebs really care about the Japan military shit, and again Yasuhiko has said neocon shit on that subject too. as far as social views go he's probably still more accepting in some pretty big areas now than the average male zenkyoto protester was in the late 60s, as "chuddy" as he sounds by modern standards. still it's funny to see many people bend over backwards to defend his comments when they'd absolutely take issue if it didn't come from a famous creator with a well established fandom headcanon of who he is

oshii was never deep into that mindset anyway and has spoken about a lot of it he just went with the flow back then, his dad told him it was dumb and he instantly dropped it. that shows how he wasnt committed at all. he recently attending a meeting with the new far-right japanese PM pushing for war and i was instantly reminded of an old interview with him
>Foreign residents have no suffrage—this is obvious. Just because they live in Japan and pay taxes does not mean they should have voting or political rights. From the concept of a modern nation-state, that is perfectly reasonable.
>They may indeed be paying taxes, but having political rights means, at times, being prepared to fight for the country. That must come first.
>Would foreign residents really fight for Japan when something serious happens? If Americans take citizenship, they are required to pledge loyalty. Without going through that oath, one cannot obtain citizenship. This is exactly what I am arguing the core issue now.

100% he loves this new PM

>>29615
Where's that quote from? Yeah he sure seems to have developed weird hawkish views. But again that goofy ISIS comment from Yasuhiko is quite similar. I loved Yamato season 1 but S2 started with a similar premise that kinda screamed "we gotta be the galaxy's police, it's actually moral and empathetic" and this reminded me of that.

it's from his No, Communication is Unnecessary essay. a lot of the anti miyazaki snippets from oshii comes from it as well. he had these right wing views for decades and im not surprised his first time ever attending a government meeting was sanae takaichi https://www.gentosha.co.jp/book/detail/9784344982550/

>>29620
>he had these right wing views for decades
I mean, didn't he say something along the lines of "it was more about just wanting to see the system destroyed than any specific worldview" regarding his Zenkyoto days? I suspect it may have been similar with some other guys from that generation >>29610 even if
others were more radical about it at the time. I'm not sure where this "Oshii's work was always turbo leftist" meme comes from beyond a desire to "claim" creators for internet argument points (similar to right-wingers saying K-On is "on their side" or whatever). I've seen multiple people jump through hoops to maintain Oshii's fandom status as a "valuable progressive ally" and suddenly go "well actually very possible to have his chud gamer views on PC culture & still be a leftist". Mind you I think it's true and there are people who still maintain more fundamental left-wing views while saying stuff like that… but not only is Oshii not one of them, this usually comes from people who'd usually never tolerate such comments unless for the purpose of defending a conclusion "the community" already came to.
>im not surprised his first time ever attending a government meeting was sanae takaichi
What about Takashi Murakami, though? He was the other guy at the meeting who's relevant to anime and he doesn't strike me as a partisan right winger. For the record I know some people think takes like "Yoshinori Kanada's fire dragon has roots in classic Japanese art, like Hokusai's Fine Wind, Clear Morning" are nationalistic & right wing but 1. Isao Takahata had similar takes regarding manga's roots in old Japanese prints and he was a lifelong leftist and 2. thinking the idea that Japan has a culture is "dangerous nationalism" is silly neurotic idpol - especially since the retort from American academics & people like Eiji Otsuka tends to be "no, manga/anime were actually inspired by the Americans and Soviets" and from a left-wing perspective, giving America so much credit should be equally "problematic" (mind you it's all of those - they had their own cultural history of telling stories through art & mixed it with western influence like American comic paneling and soviet montage theory etc).

>>29621
That entire debate sounds retarded to me, there are primordial examples of "sequential art" from all over the world, but everybody knows that nearly everything we lump under comics today (including manga) would not exist, period, without English and American influence. Is it bad leftism now to admit that the countries with most soft power in history have had an enormous influence on other cultures?
It's arguing over whether the final American influence on manga is 10% or 20% or 80% that seems impossible to logically quantify AND has no meaning other than cryptopol culture war shitflinging.

>>29622
No, I just think it's dumb to *completely dismiss* the influence of older Japanese art because "it would encourage nationalism to make such a connection, given Japan's history" when such a big part of the retort tends to be "well actually no, it was American influence!" - no it's not objectively quantifiable, yes sequential storytelling in its modern form in Japan would not exist without America, but part of why it stands out is their own artistic tradition and analyzing these traditions can lead to really interesting insightful commentary (see Peter Chung drawing a line between things like Bunraku shows and modern Japan being more likely to treat animation as "moving drawings" than "illusion of life" on the Anipages forums back in the day, or a lot of the shit Murakami pointed out). And it doesn't have to be "muh pure Yamato soul" nationalism when China & Korea had similar aesthetic sense & stylization and have a longer history of handling manga/anime aesthetics well compared to, say, America.
