Dandadan - best new shonen, or overrated zoomer garbage?

Personally I'm enjoying it despite almost dropping it in episode 1 due to portrated sexual violence. A side question is to anyone who reads the manga, is it worth the time for somebody who isnt a huge manga reader and usually only reads the manga of my absolute favourite anime?

>Dandadan - best new shonen, or overrated zoomer garbage?
Lets find out, tell me how correct I am: is the show about a boring nobody protagonist whose mundane life gets turned upside down when he accidentally acquires some sort of superpower which he cant use properly in the beginning so he is considered a useless underdog even though his power will allow him to overcome any major obstacle plot demand. He will be initiated into this new fantastical world by a girl who is initially stronger and more knowledgeable than him but over the course of the show becomes increasingly subservient.

>>26231
Not really.

>>26232
Ok, but to what extend not really?

>>26234
>is the show about a boring nobody protagonist whose mundane life gets turned upside down

That's really subjective and not necessarily specific to the shonen genre, but yeah it's about two more or less normal high school kids. The girl as a gyaru that's obsessed with some Japanese actor and the guy is an otaku obsessed with aliens and conspiracy theories. She believes in ghosts but not aliens and he thinks she's retarded for not believing in something OBJECTIVELY REAL like aliens ufos or obama and something dumb and fakey like gHoStS. They dare each other to go to a haunted tunnel and an abandoned hospital said to be frequented by aliens and things pop off from there.

>he accidentally acquires some sort of superpower which he cant use properly in the beginning so he is considered a useless underdog even though his power will allow him to overcome any major obstacle plot demand

He gets possessed by a horny ghost that fights a bunch of horny aliens but she's a psychic, and while they're pretty powerful they've still got to use their brains because raw power either isn't enough or actually detrimental to them winning.

>He will be initiated into this new fantastical world by a girl who is initially stronger and more knowledgeable than him but over the course of the show becomes increasingly subservient.

I guess you could technically say that's the case but she's only tangentially connected to the supernatural world by her hot grandma that is a psychic medium. She kinda sorta knows some wikipedia level information about ghosts and he kinda knows some stuff about aliens but they're both pretty out of their element. I hope she doesn't become more subservient to him over time but she is down bad for him because he has the same name as her actor crush and sometimes by accident says the tough guy shit that melts her panties.

So yeah if you paint with a broad enough brush it's just shonenslop but nuance, the faggiest bullshit of all, makes it distinct.

Imo its not amazing but it is a fun watch. I'm just hoping it doesn't go the way of jujutsu by setting up an interesting rules-based world and then abandoning it to jump up its own asshole only to hang itself before actually reaching climax.

I heard they got a hot grandma on the show but she doesn't even look old or anything

>>26231
This sounds like that cyberpunk anime

>>26230
I've been reading the manga for a while, I saw Science Saru is doing the show, but I only vaguely watched the first episode. Overall, I think it's good, and is better than a good few of its Battle Shonen contemporaries mostly because it's less of a battle shonen and more of a romantic sitcom with battle shonen elements. There's very little formal structure that pushes it towards a "be the best" story, and it isn't playing for keeps in the angst/edge department. It mostly stays light-hearted, goofy, and breezy and remains earnest in its tilt towards complete dumbassery to the point of charm. I think it's earned its spot in the current cultural moment.

>>26254
I tire of battle shonen.
The motives behind the wars of respective franchises dont even gave consistent goals.

>>26230
>best new shonen
Dandadan is my favorite shounen after Samurai Jack and Family Guy.

Shounen is adolescent fiction, it's not a genre.

manga goes hard

its commitment to being a romcom with battle shonen elements (as pointed out by >>26254) actually does make it stand out a lot and makes it charming in a very unique way

imo it deserves its praise

>>26236
>not necessarily specific to the shonen genre
There's no shounen genre, it's a shounen romcom/harem/isekai trend.

>>26265
>Explain
Shounen just means "boys' comics." It's a manga demographic that defines a manga anthology magazine and its content (Shonen Jump is for boys' manga, CoroCoro is for kids' manga, Nakayoshi is for girls' manga and Young Jump is for adult manga). Shounen is associated with action shows because a lot of action manga gets published in teen magazines, kinda similar to the superhero comics in the West. However, stuff like Azumanga Daioh, Lucky Star and Highschool DxD are also considered shounen. Because it's for teenagers.

Keep saying this to my friends, but the model kind of reminds of a version of Ranma where the cast aren't assholes most of the time (not talking down on Ranma, love that group of dickheads). There's a lot of joke synergy that's clearly the focus and the central romance is cute and never actually threatened.

This show is absolute trash. Even the artwork sucks. Its just zoomer slop. This is the Japanese equivalent of Disney garbage.

>>26236
another hot girl meets otaku romcom except with aliens™ and ghosts™ with cute anthropromorphic cat™
when will you retarded faggots stop falling for this stupid shit?????

>>26245
she dresses like a truck stop whore and she doesnt look old at all. maybe the gyaru was a teen pregnancy? all they do is color her hair white and go see shes old like whatever

>>26272
dirty fujos are scum

i like it

Is the main heroine a tsundere? If she's a tsundere I'm not watching.

>>26341
damn, this alot of buzzwords.

>>26399
Me too

All shonen is inherently trash tbh unless its sol

>>26403
>All shonen is inherently trash
Is it though? I mean, pandering of any kind instead of "doing it for the art" creates shit but DBZ, Fist of the Northstar and JoJo are fun. And so is Konosuba, I have to begrudgingly admit that. I'd be a hypocrite to say I do not enjoy shonen despite watching JoJo and playing Sonic games or Street Fighter or whatever.

This is it, Street Fighter and Mega Man X are hot garbage, the messiah has spoken.

>>26412
I apologize I was extremely high when I wrote that. I'm not a fan of action stuff, at least like sword, hand to hand and fantasy stuff so I gravitate more toward comedy and the like

>>26412
Konosuba is trash though, I only made though 3 episodes and I dropped it

I found this pretty fun to watch. Nice animation, nice character dynamics, and the episode on Silky's backstory was very artful. Though some of the humor came off too childish to be funny and I wouldn't say every episode is great directing some was just mediocre.

>>26431
I wouldn't be surprised if there is someone who hates Miyazaki's movies here by this point.
>>26430
>I gravitate more toward comedy and the like
Most comedy shows are shonen though? Except Pop Team Epic and Excel Saga.

>>26434
nta but I also disliked Konosuba, the main character strikes me as an amoral Ralph Cifaretto ass piece of shit

>>26434
The more i think about it the more i realize I don't know what I'm talking about.

>>26435
>nta but I also disliked Konosuba
I dunno, I read a fan doujin and a few hentai works and watched a few clips and I thought they were funny but maybe I'll change my opinion if I'll watch the anime. Also, the way you describe Kazuma sounds like Fleetway Sonic and while some people absolutely loathe Fleetway Sonic some people love him so that depends on your mindset and on how you expect the protagonist to act.

>>26434
Not a fan of Miyazaki films. I havent seen any but I got tired of every single person telling me to watch them so now I don't really want to.

>>26231
The main thing that's different about DanDaDan it is, at its heart, a romance. It juggles a billion other genres at will, from action to horror and comedy, but the foundation is in romance.

Second, you're assuming the boy is the protagonist, and he isn't. The girl is the protagonist. He's the love interest. He gets to do cool things, he gets to carry parts of the story, but fundamentally, the show is about Momo.

That's why we meet Momo and Momo's friends. We hang out at Momo's house, learn Momo's domestic situation. Encounter Momo's ex boyfriend.

To this day, nobody knows what the fuck Ken's parents look like! Because that's not where the story hangs out!

>>26230
It's a charming and breezy show. Like others have said, it's more of a goofy action romcom than a straight battle shonen. What sells it for me is that the characters actually act their age. A lot of YA-oriented stuff does that thing where kids/teenagers basically act like tiny 20somethings. The characters in Dandadan actually feel like their age. They're overdramatic, petty, emotionally disregulated and prone to fits in the exact way people can be when they're growing up. They feel authentic in a way not a whole lot of young characters in anime are. When watching it, I thought in the back of my head "I knew these exact type of kids in my high school."

>>26434
I like miyazaki's movies a lot, but how he gets meme'd annoys me. People act like his movies are some kind of cottagecore cozy wank, when the reality is that anyone who's watched anything apart from totoro, kiki's delivery service and spirited away can tell you there really is a dark and destructive side to his work. The man hates modern capitalist society from the pit of his soul and boy howdy does he want you to know it. Also I like Satoshi Kon and Mamoru Oshii more

>>26524
>A lot of YA-oriented stuff does that thing where kids/teenagers basically act like tiny 20somethings.
Well… It's not YA-oriented, it's literally for teenagers.

Spirited Away is very dark and anticapitalist. The girl's parents get turned into pigs to be eaten unless she can earn enough wages working in the bathhouse to free them, but of course her employer is only tricking her and has no intention of an honest trade.

>>26533
he's a lib though because her employer is ultimately a good person and in the end there are no villains. whatever class reading you make unto his movies will be flawed in some way because miyazaki is no sort of leftist and certainly never intended any overtly societally radical message in his works. his movies are about growing up (conforming to and finding your place in society)

>>26534
The man has literally called himself a socialist and was active in organizing animator's unions with the help of the JCP

>>26534
>in the end there are no villains.
That's not incompatible with marxist worldview.

>>26236
I like Dandadan but you completely failed to elaborate on why it rises above what's uninteresting about those clichés lol.

Better site-relevant question: are the (((Space Globalists))) a rightoid dogwhistle, a jab at imperialism, or just the show incorporating conspiracy culture stuff the way it usually does with no real world allegory intended
