this manga feels kinds like the author is racist and is making a strawman literal cartoon representation of foreigners for his sociopathic main characters to murder and cannibalize. i've only read the first two chapters though.
https://www.mangaread.org/manga/drama-queen/chapter-1/>Aliens have settled among humans in Japan after saving Earth. One day, Kitami tells Nomamoto—a factory worker under a harsh alien supervisor—that his own family was wiped out by aliens. The two fast become friends, but one day Kitami does the unimaginable.>>27485why does it surprise you
plot lines in general are fascist, narrative structures are reactionary
>>27486well,there was a 400+ posts thread on siberia which was litteraly "if you make someone bad intrinsically, that means you hate black people" so this kind of shit doesn't surprise me on this site.
other than that the manga reminded me of another one where alien live "peacefully" on earth and the MC kills and eat them, but I can't remember the name
>>27486the monsters aren't unambiguously evil though. some of them are shown to be annoying to the main characters and others outright criminal but they are not shown, at least from the 3 chapters that i've now read, that they are inherently evil. also the inconveniences that the aliens cause in combination with panels like this really make me more convinced of my feeling that the author is racist. or at the very least subconciously racist if he honestly made excuse for this work.
>>27487they can be. a very clear example is The Turner Diaries.
>>27490None of this has anything to do with racism.
>subconciously racistVibes and aura.
>>27486>why do these college kids keep calling out my racist dog whistles?because you are weaponizing the language: if they call you out, they sound crazy, if they don't, they allow you to shift the discourse to the right and to spread your thinly veiled fascist narratives
>>27490they are. all plot lines and narratives under a fascist society (the world today) are fascist
>>27485I have read up to chapter 11 and sincerely I don't know yet. According to a friend of mine it's anti-korean racism though.
>>27486>>27490Are they evil? So far from what I've read the depection of the aliens didn't seem necessarely evil; the author has swung back and forth between "actually bad" and "annoying but innocuous", and to this point one could argue that the author is playing with an unreliable narrator. After all, the main characters aren't exactly good people, and the story doesn't seem to hide it.
>>27488You mean the Tolkien bad hellthread?
>>27493> i dont understand how retards interpreted this as "omg based save evropa"People on twitter are retarded
> the aliens are in control of society and delegate the natives to a 2nd class status with their superior technology as the justification.I haven't really seen that yet honestly, though maybe I haven't gotten far enough.
>>27494Drama Queen
>>27486The concept of pure evil sentient races is inherently reactionary.
The fact that they're a staple of modern fantasy (and thus taken for granted) is not a contradiction to that.
>>27515Yeah, a lot of it goes back to Tolkien slop that is very much liked by all kinds of fascists and other reactionaries.
Just look at their reaction to Rings of Power tv show. They didn't even make orc good or sympathetic, just gave them opinion or something. "We don't like when Sauron kills us, we want a leader that is better". And all rightoids went fucking apeshit ebcause of that.
>>27634>implying d&d isn't fascistnot very cash money of you
couldn't decipher the rest of your post
>>27636D&D is objectively not fascist.
you couldn't decipher the rest of the post because your reading comprehension is garbage, which is why you think D&D is fascist.
>>27485I dont even get what this Manga is supposed to be
It starts anti imperialist and turns into a personal drama for the guy that involves idols?
It's so weird how there's literally aliens yet we don't really explore them with the respect they deserve, it's just mundane showing.
>>27485well, basically it's "immigrants are bad, billions must die". they just randomly kill aliens because they are a different species and no other reason. all we have is a vague "maybe they lied about the meteor" and "they are somewhat privileged and annoying".
also kitami's backstory directly references an irl incident where a foreigner got away scot free
obviously the government conspiracy is gonna turn out true, but that hardly justifies the protagonists just murdering random civilians
tho my issue with the manga is how retarded it is, they're two randos murdering multiple people in the open and no one caught them yet aside from an alien killing organization that wants to know their "secret", sent a spy among them and despite how lax they are still hasn't figured out noma eats the aliens
it's all too contrived. plus the manga loves to have big cliffhangers resulting in complete nothingburgers by the next chapter
>>27681nooo you don't understand we have to act like this right-wing slop has artistic value and it's sophisticated and carries a deeper message because… I just consume media uncritically and now you are hurting my feelings! I WOULD HAVE NOTICED IF IT WAS FASCIST, OK?
and if I say something bad about <popular thing> people are going to think I'm a pink haired liberal (I need validation)!!!
>>27684i wish it was more fascistic, at least there would be something to chew on narratively. as it is it's just hollow shock value
also we need more kitami schizo moments
or just ANYTHING the manga is so averse to doing anything interesting
>>27486if you actually read the manga there's obvious attempts to make the main characters seem like a caricature of an unhinged real-life far-right racist. it's not just "monster bad".
i find most of the hand-wringing over this kind of discourse unsympathetic tbh. like the frieren thing. yeah, thinking "demons bad = author is a fascist" is retarded, but the story also goes out of the way to comment on humans being excessively trusting of each other (imagine actually believing this btw lol) being a weakness that lets them fall prey to demons. or AoT, people will whine about how you shouldn't bring real genocide into discussions about the story even though the manga traces deliberate parallels between the story's civilizations and real ones.
the moment you make an explicit connection to reality any criticism from that angle is fair game tbh.
also tolkien himself was troubled by the implication that the orcs were ontologically evil and regretted it. funny that his fans aren't willing to put as much thought into it as he did.
>>27681>tho my issue with the manga is how retarded it is, they're two randos murdering multiple people in the open and no one caught them yet aside from an alien killing organization that wants to know their "secret", sent a spy among them and despite how lax they are still hasn't figured out noma eats the aliensThe manga would have been better if the alien stuff had been explained from the start instead of doing this mystery crap
Then the actions of the main characters would have more context
>>27678aliens so far have just been "humans" with little else going for them. We don't even see their technology, what their normal culture is or anything.
that's probably why it comes off as racist, because it feels like it only exists to be a metaphor for "others"
>>27734i did not get the feeling that the protagonists are supposed to be the bad guys at all. that would require a story that actually takes a stance on anything tho
>>27802One of the interesting things about this manga is that they made the main characters treacherous and annoying all the time.
Nomamoto, who supposedly hates aliens, forgets her mission and betrays the team for food. The embodiment of gluttony, she would sell her soul for food.
Kitami almost killed his boss, who tried to help him and be his friend, twice. First by beating him and then by having Nomamoto almost eat him alive. He is a coward who is not open about his feelings and motivations, definitely not hero material.
>>27796>i did not get the feeling that the protagonists are supposed to be the bad guys at allto be clear when i say the characters seem like a caricature of unhinged real rightoids i'm not sure the author *realizes* they're unhinged. but the parallels with real paranoid anti-immigrant nuts seem pretty deliberate. it's just the question of whether the author agrees with them or even has any stance on the subject at all.
like at this point it seems entirely possible that the author is just using these real-life people as a basis for a mindless story that doesn't mean anything, but like i said in my post, one cannot deliberately dialogue with the real world and then strictly demand that the audience see everything from an in-universe perspective.
>>27485People miss how Fujimoto-inspired this is, even it's premise is a spin on one of his early one-shots
https://xbato.com/chapter/1141024The author took a socially sensitive topic into a sleazy story and so far has worked in getting people into it. I don't think he even has a major statement to make or even knows exactly where to head the story, many weekly manga don't
I legit think people are looking too much into it
