I feel like the reason why Baki, one punch man s1, all of dragon ball, Ippo, and megalo box did do well with the action even in comparison to other shone isn’t that the combat is realistic to say but that it’s coherent. Those shows don’t feature overly complicated magic systems or spam special effects anywhere near as much as other anime, so it’s easier for viewers to register what the fuck is happening even if they’ve never watched a single anime series in their lives.
Like fuck, I’d be lying if I said I could understand anything happening in one piece much less fairy tail in any scene compared to the average hand to hand exchange in dragon ball or whatever fights Lee is in in Naruto. All the isekai that get pumped out are even worse when it comes to making fights completely incoherent.

There's different ways to make fights interesting. Baki's fights are fun because of the absurd shit the story throws at you, One Piece's fights are fun (well, some of them; Oda has gotten worse at everything over the years so I won't generalize, also the anime tends to ruin them in terms of pacing) because they tie well into the emotional stakes of the story. I also think it's an exaggeration to call even the worst ones hard to understand although I generally agree that there's an overuse of rigid rules systems in shonen.
Now HxH, that's a manga where I can't understand (and don't much are about understanding) half the power system shit even though I love everything else about it.

I think gear 5 was handled well actually. A form that contrasts the others by being deliberately fun and cartoonish is a big relief from all the other edgy junk going on with the war arc and increasing use of slavery as a plot point

Early Naruto was more consistent with fight sequences. They didn't use jutsus all that often.
They used mainly pure physical prowess.

>>28572
Honestly the hate for Gear 5 is mostly from people who take One Piece too seriously and don't acknowledge the inherent cartoonishness of it, similar to how people complained they chose a goofy-looking Hispanic guy to play Luffy in the live-action

>>28577
Yes, but people also were hitting each other less often given budgetary constraints. There’s a lot more taijutsu in boruto and shippuden compared to Naruto
>>28578
This. I think the character designs for most of the characters alone should be enough of a dead giveaway that the shows harsher themes on slavery, the drug war, and bounty killings in the absence of centralized violence (whatever the new world’s navy that doflamingo will always hate) are and to an extent have to be relieved by its more fun and vibrant upsides.

>There’s a lot more taijutsu in boruto and shippuden compared to Naruto

People like to give Boruto shit for having new tech being used in place of traditional styles Justus but they are more into athletic abilities rather than merely using psychosomatic illusions.

My favourite anime fights:

King J-Der first fight after GGG is beaten in GaoGaiGar.

Homura vs Mami in Madoka Rebellion.

Civilian PoV fight in Gundam Hathaway's Flash.

The fight scenes in Genocdal Organ

Asuka vs Mass Production Evangelions

Sewer battle in Patlabour 2

Attack on Torrington Base

tbh most of the fights in Gundam Unicorn where the Gundams aren't in it and its just grunt suits

Gunbuster vs the alien space ships

If you have watched them you know they are the best fight scenes.

Not really judging the OP with this since >>28565 mostly talks about stuff like elaborate systems of techniques & not just the fights being too visually extravagant, but when it comes to the purely visual aspect I think "unreadable nonsensical shit" when applied to anime battles is mostly a contrarian meme in reaction to over-the-top flashy battles catching on to the extent that they did in recent years with stuff like Kimetsu no Yaiba and modern One Piece (of course, such series being hugely popular enforces the idea that such execution is for "lamestream posers"). Sometimes there ARE issues with readability in such fights, yes, but those can occur just as easily in more down-to-earth "traditional" battles. most of the fights championed by people who criticize "flashiness over substance" are still over-the-top and not realistic (cartoons are rarely "down to earth" to begin with) but I think what it really boils down to is the age-old idea that showmanship & exaggeration (essentially stuff that's fun to "the turd-chucking masses, ugh") are worse than perceived subtlety. Here's the pope essentially saying "shounenshit is shit, watch slice of life" in 1323.

Then you have even sillier comments like "Naruto ninjas aren't real ninjas, they're practically wizards!" coming from westerners whose idea of ninjas was formed by anglophone media and have no idea that, yes, ninjas in Japanese folklore use supernatural techniques and ride giant frogs. Or the claim that flashiness is being used to "hide bad animation" being applied to stuff that's obviously extremely well animated under the effects (I saw someone Takeshi Koike's Iron Man trailer back when it was new https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_ej7ZlS2oQ&ab_channel=ComicHeroNews)

I showed that one Luffy vs Kizaru scene by Vincent Chansard, the one everyone shits on for being THE perfect embodiment of unreadable degenerate excesses in modern anime fights https://x.com/v2TokyoGhost/status/1916530135555002416, to a friend who's mainly into western cartoons and cartoony anime/manga like 60s-80s Lupin (Dragon Ball being the only shonen he's intimately familiar with) and he just went "yeah it's… fine? I don't get it, seems pretty readable to me!" - not to say there were zero readability flaws in it but the hyper-emotional dogpiling on it IMO has more to do with larger anime fandom culture wars than pure analysis of the scene in a vacuum.
