This shit would’ve had me in tears if I read it a few years ago when I was less jaded about life. Shits fucked and I’m so upset rocks got done so badly man. Good job oda, you cooked.

There is so much wrong with the ending of this flashback, that I don't know where to start. Oda didn't cook. To contrary, I think it is becoming obvious (even for the biggest Oda dickriders), that he doesn't really know what he wants from this story anymore. I believe he wishes for a story like Hunter x Hunter where he has a maincast, but they are not obligated to be in every arc, so that you can have the time to flesh out the worldbuilding. This whole GV-Flashback ended so underwhelming, just because Oda knows he needs to drive the story with the Straw Hats further.

Oh shut up. It was amazing nonetheless and I love his approach regardless. You don’t see writers put *this much* detail on background elements in these types of media. I love Davy (rocks) and his brief backstory was more than awe dropping given everything I saw at wano. Getting to see even minor characters like captain John or ivankov make a reappearance was incredible. I know that oda clearly wanted to do more but also had to get on with elbaph, and I’m nonetheless happy that he got to do this much at the least. Also Roger looks hot in this flashback

>Oh shut up.
Come on man. One Piece ain't the "peak fiction" some weirdos want you to believe. (also, when did people start talking so weird?) I grew up with One Piece and love its whole premise, but it ain't moving people like it used to. All the flashy animation, live-action and hype it got in the TikTok era won't change the fact that Oda is getting older and has been slipping on revealing plot points etc.
>It was amazing nonetheless and I love his approach regardless You don’t see writers put *this much* detail on background elements in these types of media.
He used to do way better in that regard, but sure its still impressive. Writing serialized manga is not easy and he deserves some credit.
>I love Davy (rocks) and his brief backstory was more than awe dropping given everything I saw at wano.
Agreed. Wano was a huge disappointment given its monumental hype that surrounded the place for years. I just think given its in-verse importance, GV is pretty mid. But I admit that it is better than anything we have got since Wano and Rocks is a pretty big part of it. I just wish we got more of him. How come he values family, despite his aspirations which would and did put his family at considerable risk. What were his differences with Roger? What were the dynamics inside his crew? They are described as chaotic and without team work, but Kaido, Linlin and especially Whitebeard had these moments were they showed that they cared about Rocks in some way atleast. I need some explanation for why Whitebeard ditched though. If I am Teach I am going to the bottom of this and I think he did.
>I know that oda clearly wanted to do more but also had to get on with elbaph, and I’m nonetheless happy that he got to do this much at the least.
He should have fleshed them out in Wano already instead of the scabbards and that retard Oden, who we are so forced to like. Oda wants too much, but like I said, he is growing older too so he has to compromise on the straw hats in order for the story to finish. Also we now know that Imu is basically unbeatable if not for some bullshit power up like ancient joyboy haki or something.
>Also Roger looks hot in this flashback
So this is what its all about. Gooning? I like Eris although she was a Nami clone (like most women in One Piece). Also Rocks looks better than Roger. He has that ruffian, edgy look to him like Teach which I like. I hope Teach will become the pirate king at least. He deserves it more than Luffy imo.

When I saw Garps justification for why he continues to stay with the marines, I asked myself if he hates this character or he really thought we were accepting this as a valid reason? Is One Piece for children after all?

>>29411
Nah I get what oda was trying to say with garp. If people like him and fujitora aren’t in the navy, who’s going to serve as a role model for marines that are actually trying to protect civilians from pirates or the WG? From what we’ve seen from previous arcs, the navy exactly funded well enough to give enough of its troops training to deal with sub warlord - yonko level and above threats and there’s a lot of corruption internally and blatant subordination to celestial dragons whom are known to be absolute scum among marine ranks. If people like garp, sengoku, smoker, fujitora, and for a time Kuzan weren’t in it, the navy would’ve likely collapsed internally and even more civilians would be left vulnerable to both the pirate threat and the WGs actions.

>>29412
Oda gets praised so much for his worldbuilding but I find it lackluster tbqh. The marines are shown to be simultaneously a top down hierarchical organization where dissent in any form is not tolerated and also an organization where you can do basically whatever you want of you got the power to back it up. Akainu is said to have remodeled the navy after the paramount war, yet accepts Fujitora as an Admiral who is an absolute wild card. The organization is all over the place conceptually
>Sengoku
That guy was a WG lapdog all his life

>>29412
Wtf. Garp is an entryist?

I take back what I said. 1166 just released
https://w054.1piecemanga.com/manga/one-piece-chapter-1166/

And I was left mad as hell from what I was reading. Fodderland fraudling decided to continue being a fucking pussy and killed rocks on 1hp and 0% stamina. The fucking rat couldn’t even be bothered to kill him solo, no he had to come with the other gods knights despite being fully regenerated. Then the rest of the chapter is its own disaster. Harald twerking for the WG AGAIN after openly stating his regret over not helping rocks when he needed support at his weakest point, nothing done on dragon and garps relations being changed now that both men have witnessed how fucking morally bankrupt the marine and WG are as institutions, Sengoku being fucking oblivious to the threat of imu after witnessing a whole ass island get destroyed and getting intel from garp, ugh this whole chapter just left me feeling upset.

>>29414
"Entryist" is probably giving Garp too much credit tbh. That implies he's trying to change the WG from within but in reality he is just trying to be a "good guy" within the bounds of the law. Fujitora being able to help civilians as an Admiral also kinda of makes a mockery of Garp's thing of not being promoted past Vice Admiral. Also with Fujitora as Admiral if Garp actually accepted the promotion you'd have 2/3 Admirals who were somewhat rogue plus a third (Borsalino) with questionable loyalty. Garp's issue is he won't challenge the authority of the WG because he bought into the idea they are legitimate since they're "not as bad" as the pirates.

If Garp hadn't sided with the WG they would have been meaningfully weaker. Despite the Elders, Imu, Fleet Admiral, and the other Admirals having greater power on paper, Garp was kind of the work horse of the the navy for a while and without him the government's hold on power would have loosened, to say nothing of a scenario where he directly opposed them. How much Garp knows about the WG is not clear but it's unlikely he has the kind of knowledge that could justify his position (the Joy Boy stuff) as keeping the government more humane while waiting for the situation that could finally overthrow it.

>>29412
Be fr though if Garp was working outside the WG with Roger, WB, Dragon, any of those kinds of people, he could have been building a meaningful alternative, some kind of dipole that could challenge the global supremacy of the WG.

>Garp’s issue is he won't challenge the authority of the WG because he bought into the idea they are legitimate since they're "not as bad" as the pirates.

You did NOT read the manga properly mate. Garp knows well enough that the WG is scum even by pirate standards and was chewing out sengoku over what he saw. The dude literally witnessed the gods knights smoking 1hp rocks, a literal fucking demon the celestial dragons consider the worlds true leader, some dude that got possessed by said demon and forced into attacking his own clan and family, and was literally working on the side of that pirate’s friends anyways to save the fucker from the government. He even busted out dragon from jail and fully accepted that his son considered him to be scum without any resistance or even request from dragon to let him out of jail too.

The guys problem don’t that he thinks the WG is somehow less evil than the pirates—far from it. It’s because he views the marines as the only institution with any power to protect normal citizens from both the government and the pirate threat in the rare moments when it can even if that institution has proven time and time again to amount to a lapdog for the celestial dragons. His stance isn’t even unreasonable

Remember, he chose to stay with the marines decades before the revolutionary army would ever form as a non marine alternative solution to both the pirate and WG threat.

I think Garp's whole gimmick would have been more convincing, if we had a better picture of the Navy as an organization and what exactly he did inside this organization in the decades after God Valley. Now it seems like one retcon after another with the motivations behind the top brass of the Navy. Oda could have written convincing dynamics detailing the friction between the WG and the Navy using real life examples like the relations between the NSDAP and the Prussian Military elite or make it a more harmonious relationship because the upper echelon of the Navy are all nobles themselves and upper mobility in the organisation is restricted because of your birth status. Like I said, the guy isn't that good at worldbuilding. Byproduct of writing manga since his teens and not really understanding how the world works.

Btw. I really hate how Wano is this potrayal of glorious, honorable samurai who love open borders being invaded by mongolic barbarian savages favouring isolationism, when historically it was the other way around. Any japanes author who portrays the samurai in a uncritically good light should be hung by the nuts.

>>29457
Fair take on wano

Unfair on garp. Oda legitimately may have had the notes on what you’re describing but doesn’t have the time to put that on his pages. He’s on a tight schedule that he frequently struggles to keep up with and regularly doesnt have the time to cover everything he wants

Don’t forget, the rocks side arc has been going for eleven chapters strong and oda still hasn’t had the time to detail much about rocks’ life beyond what we saw on god valley and elbaph. Imagine how much less time he has for characters like garp or Hancock given how late we are at the story. Don’t forget, ryuma and his relation to zoro needed to have his own show and comic to even be mentioned even if indirectly. Im sure oda would love to go full Malazan of the fallen with his worldbuilding, but there just aren’t enough writers on his team to get everything covered

Watching One Piece is like being a Catholic Peasant, reading One Piece is to be a Hussite Revolutionary. You can doubt One Piece's importance, but the CIA doesn't.

>>29459
Can you stop speaking in riddles and say what you mean?

>>29460
Basically if the CIA *didn’t* respect One Piece, it would be less effective at its job. Trying to own One Piece as a symbol for US backed psyops is an attempt to hold onto legitimacy. So it turns out “knowing how to read One Piece” has real geopolitical stakes rn

What people tend to misunderstand is that an intelligence agency deals in HERMENEUTICS— the founders of the OSS were obsessed with literary modernism & hermeneutics. Angleton was an editor of an avant garde poetry magazine (Furioso)— deception in general requires sophisticated hermeneutics, because one can only deceive a reader, & to understand why a reader reads & the means by which they read, is to study hermeneutics. The Intelligence Agencies are *story tellers* — they need to create a compelling narrative for their operations to have any effect (in the long term). The efficacy of the narrative is itself the efficacy of the institution. Now, to tell a story which is compelling & means different things to different people— a sort of “hieroglyphic narrative” where multiple stories are ironically juxtaposed, providing a sense of ambiguity to what is actually constructed formally (ie: authoritatively)— this is success in terms of the geopolitics of the collective imaginary. America, obviously, won this victory a long time ago, but is losing its grip. The Japanese have, I would suggest, usurped this recently— but still in service of America. Manga & anime has become the means by which “the free world” (american empire & its satellites) can conceive of itself. It has to promote anime as its legitimacy as a project is less than the legitimacy of anime as a force in the collective imaginary. American science fiction used to hold this place, but Japan has, I think, completely won on this level.
