Of the twin protagonists, one is a diehard liberal who is definitely portrayed as the good guy, but his naive idealism costs him on more than one occasion. Meanwhile the liberal regime he is part of is portrayed every bit as corrupt and dysfunctional as it's real-world analogues are. There is no rosy-eyed "liberalism fuck yeah" to be found here.

lotgh is magnificent, but certainly not for marxist political commentary lol. the worldbuilding, character depth and conflict, and political complexity, are what make this show a gem, and one of my personal fav anime of all time.
i think if you project the expectation of agreeable political philosophy onto media, *especially* as a marxist, you're setting a pretty narrow configuration for what you can and can't enjoy :P

It has a liberal lens, as one would expect, but the actual plot and the characters are compelling enough that you will like it. One of the best anime ever made and I say that unironically.
