I think watching the directors commentary of Evangelion really opened my eyes to the series. None of it is that deep at all. He said he picked the Christian mythology simply for the reason Christianity is not a major religion in Japan. Halfway through the series they blew their budget which is why they switched from mecha fights to the long, low frame-rate, student film tier nonsense. It's not that deep.

I love Evangelion though. But I do start getting tired of the series at the point where as I mentioned they ran out of money. Maybe I'll go watch it again. Never even seen the remake.

I can't understand how a person can unironically dislike Evangelion (unless it is because of the naked 14 year olds). Like do you really think the second part of the season is boring? How? Episodes 16 to 24 are like the most exciting run of television eve.

I always doubt that quote as legit and I think he was having a laugh at the expense of dummies, but before you get the demi-urge to punch me in the face, I don't think the plot of evangelion could have possibly worked even on a functional level if the religion in question wasnt millenarian to begin with, since bringing forth the eschaton seems rather central to the text, so that puts a big red cross on shinto, and maybe on buddhism. second, the biggest millenarian religion ever is christianity. it seems like a no-brainer really if you want your work to be about the end of the world through mystic means.

The depth from Evangelion comes from the characters themselves and their psychology. Everything else is fluff.

Art should insist upon itself. That's what art is for. If you feel like the art you're consuming is too absorbed in itself you are just too self-centered to appreciate a different perspective and just want keys jangled in your face.

Honestly Evangelion lore is wasted on Evangelion.

The lore in Evangelion doesn’t matter. It’s just a character study with sci-fi window dressing that’s paying self-aware homage to cynical 80s mecha.

It’s like trying to piece together the Twin Peaks lore, you’re missing the point by being a pedant over shit the filmmakers consciously viewed as window dressing. Evangelion is mecha for depressed kids and arthouse weirdos, and that’s fine. That’s what made it unique.

Let it be instead of trying to prove you’re more clever than a depressed autistic guy’s pet therapy project

man PEOPLE NEED TO TAKE FUCKING SHOWERS. Getting hit by waves of STINK and the worst part was it was intermittent like the cloud was bouncing off the walls like the dvd screen saving screens while watching EoE. And people stayed silent throughout. unfortunate!
