How do I learn to draw in a cute cartoony artstyle like in picrel?

Im a complete beginner to art, but every art tutorial and guide I see seems to be made for learning to draw in a "realistic" professional style.

>draw the photorealistic head
>erase some details
>???
>a perfect circle

I don't know anything about Anime but I do know that universally Big Eyes, Big mouths, fast movements, and no regard for the laws of physics and gravity are considered "Cartoony"

I was able to do a pretty decent Archie comics Sonic as a kid using reference:
- put a comic next to some paper, turned to a page with a panel you wanna copy
- try to visually trace everything and put it on the copy
- compare the proportions of the final product
- repeat until happy with the results

And that would reflect in my attempt to do original stuff. That was in my teens so I'm quite rusty now but that's a pretty generalize-able strat. You get a good idea of how things are spaced from each other and really subtle angle stuff.

Get a lot of references and copy them. You‘ll get the hang of being able to draw like this. Then think about why the style looks the way it does and test your understanding by drawing from imagination. Switch between copying references, analyzing them, applying your understanding to drawings from imagination and if it still doesn’t match what you are going for revisit your references again.

Thank y'all so much! Although, that may be a bit difficult, since id have to use a lot of different references from a lot of different people, whos styles will differ from eachother in some way. Ill still try it though

draw a kitten
remove the nose, whiskers and fur
make the pupils round

I think having a varied palette of references is the healthy way to do it, even if it's a bit slower than hyper-specializing at something. Means when you do something specific, you'll be able to handle cases where the references specific to that thing lack clear guidance for.

You need to learn the rules of anatomy!!!!

>>5743
Oh okay, thank you!

>>5759
Is learning anatomy really neccesary for an artstyle that doesn't follow the rules of anatomy?

>>5782
A lot of styles that don't look very anatomically correct are still working with anatomy as a guide.
A rule being broken is still a rule being acknowledged, if that makes any sense.

>>5783
Aww, damn it. Anatomy seems really hard, it seems like it would take me years just to get decent at it, and only then will I be able to draw in the style I want. I don't even know where I would begin to learn anatomy.

>>5791
I mean it can be gradiential: the more you know of anatomy, the more you can draw from that experience to fill the gaps like >>5743 said.
I'd say the pixiv sensei couse covers the anatomy you'll want for general purpose stuff pretty quickly:

It's a way you can hone your skill, not a hard prerequisite.

Thank you very much. Sorry my last reply sounds pretty whiney, I have a tendency to catastrophize.

>>5794
Ah no worries, I get like that too.

>>5791
I’ve been studying art including anatomy for two years. You don’t need anatomy for that art style.
