How do I learn to draw in a cute cartoony artstyle like in picrel?
Im a complete beginner to art, but every art tutorial and guide I see seems to be made for learning to draw in a "realistic" professional style.
>draw the photorealistic head
>erase some details
>???
>a perfect circle
I was able to do a pretty decent Archie comics Sonic as a kid using reference:
- put a comic next to some paper, turned to a page with a panel you wanna copy
- try to visually trace everything and put it on the copy
- compare the proportions of the final product
- repeat until happy with the results
And that would reflect in my attempt to do original stuff. That was in my teens so I'm quite rusty now but that's a pretty generalize-able strat. You get a good idea of how things are spaced from each other and really subtle angle stuff.
Get a lot of references and copy them. You‘ll get the hang of being able to draw like this. Then think about why the style looks the way it does and test your understanding by drawing from imagination. Switch between copying references, analyzing them, applying your understanding to drawings from imagination and if it still doesn’t match what you are going for revisit your references again.
