https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QowbhfZpGnUI was watching this video the other day and I couldn't help but notice that this phenomenon is something that I have seen too.
I'll use Minecraft as an example of what I'm talking about. When I was younger and played faction servers regularly I would always notice random conversations taking place in the chat talking about literally anything. You can see this phenomenon in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ArloOVQWuoBut if you have played Minecraft, or TF2, or any other casual multiplayer games with a chatroom in the last 5 years or so I don't think you'd notice anyone even having a casual conversation, even with voicechat on.
The most active voice chat I've seen in a game today would be CSGO (or CS2 if you wanted to be really pedantic), and I'm stretching the word active here since most of the time it's one guy high off their ass making the most insane statements ever.
I know this is in part due to the death of sociability in general (see, destruction of third spaces and amplification of social media) but I wonder if there's something deeper to this.
