I was watching this video the other day and I couldn't help but notice that this phenomenon is something that I have seen too.

I'll use Minecraft as an example of what I'm talking about. When I was younger and played faction servers regularly I would always notice random conversations taking place in the chat talking about literally anything. You can see this phenomenon in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ArloOVQWuo

But if you have played Minecraft, or TF2, or any other casual multiplayer games with a chatroom in the last 5 years or so I don't think you'd notice anyone even having a casual conversation, even with voicechat on.

The most active voice chat I've seen in a game today would be CSGO (or CS2 if you wanted to be really pedantic), and I'm stretching the word active here since most of the time it's one guy high off their ass making the most insane statements ever.

I know this is in part due to the death of sociability in general (see, destruction of third spaces and amplification of social media) but I wonder if there's something deeper to this.

Discord supposedly is the place people chat now. You still see people talking about politics in WoW, but thats about all they talk about.

Well for minecraft specifically you are just kinda there to build and hang out, not everyone is bolting to get to the end poem. Also servers will often have a theme and various plugins / mods that encourage social behavior: factions, economy, chunk protection with permissioning so people can build closer to eachother, ect…

A lot of my teenhood friendships started in a cracked minecraft server from back in the MCShafter days, and kept going through steam. Don't really talk to them anymore but we see eachother on the activity feed.

They cracked down on grooming during COVID.

back in the day youd hop on roblox and everyone would be talking to each other, roleplaying, having fun, nowadays kids are playing literal gambling games never talking to each other, its fuckin sad man

What about VRChat?

This proves that being high cures alienation.

What "literal gambling games"?
Video games don't count. If you want kids playing literal gambling games you need to go back at least a century or two.
Also, kids still talk to each other on chat and whatnot. The problem is, people get pretty morally obsessed with children's whereabouts and speech.

They mean pet simulator and it's clones, where you trade real money for robux so you can use them in the gacha of petsim-likes rather than it's intended purpose of buying cosmetics.

It's just vidya VC. Don't think too hard about it. I used it to spam TF2 shitposts.
