VNs are not really my thing but I'll try to contribute since I might find something that interests me if this takes off

I didn't play many translated Japanese VNs, except for like 4 or 5 chapters of Higurashi which I really enjoyed

However
I did play Katawa Shoujo
Multiple times
And this quirky art hoe is the closest thing I ever had to a real human relationship
It was beautiful
I think I wanna experience it again but at the same time it's like I'm scared of it because I feel I'll get hurt
God I'm lonely

xitter nazis love some retro VNs like Muv-Luv and so on what would be leftpilled VNs you'd recommend ?

Analogue: A Hate Story

>>44260
Everlasting Summer

Is it weird if I love short VNs but I can't really get into long ones with branching paths? I don't like doing the different paths because it feels like I am betraying my favourite characters, I don't want to go with the ones I don't like. Planetarian is my favourite VN for this reason. Also I was thinking of playing Chaos Head but I can't find a translation.

Have you played a Type-Moon VN yet? The sex scenes in tsukihime can be a bit grating, yet otherwise it's a fine mystery novel. It uses branching, mostly unrelated, paths to make the narrative feel more extensive, while remaining introspective and small in scope. Fate Stay/Night does this even more effectively, but as the progenitor of the Fate franchise its setting isn't as intriguing as it should be, feeling more fantastical in contrast to tsukihime albeit still very anime-edgy and nasu. In any case playing with a guide is usually the right choice for non-dating, non-gimmicky VNs.

Oh, and at the moment i'm playing Dies Irae. It's utter chuuni dreg, but it also has a few great fights and passably well-written heroines, so i'm not complaining.

This is actually much better than I initially grasped.

When I watched the anime at 13 I just believed it was one of those gauche shock horror animes, but the visual novel and manga gave this much more depth than I would suspect it had. At first I thought the story writing was kind of vapid, until I realized it‘s a rabbit hole with twist after twist that made my head spin but also made me enjoy detangling the story like a detective. Story writing that employs time lines and considers the knowledge base of the viewer/reader at certain moments is very difficult considering how convoluted the story gets. Much respect to the author for that. Additionally, the uncanny feeling of the series is quite distinct. The story goes from slice of life, light hearted anime to irreversible tragedy and frightening loneliness and madness in such an unexpected but convincing way. I usually dislike the old school anime look, but the visual novel made the style grow on me and it surprisingly works very well with the eerie mood in the second half of each chapter when shit hits the fan.

Definitely recommend. The visual novel I mean, not the anime which leaves out so much that you will underappreciate the series.
