obviously im also stupid for expecting the hobbyist side boards to NOT be retarded especially on a thread begging the state machine to protect their favorite products but the average american lives in such a bubble they will, with a straight face, pretend educated and skilled professionals are remotely similar to the immiserated reserveless propertyless wage workers lmfao

"Yes, the whole world is falling into hell, but goddamn it I WANNA KEEP PLAYING MY VIDEO GAMES! (((THEY))) ARE KILLING MY VIDEO GAMES!!!"

>stop killing games

<look up games that technically have been "killed"
>mostly f2p slop, online only games with shit licensing that ran out decades ago, consoomer live service garbage (Destiny 2)
Ok, cold water time.

This entire discourse is everything wrong with the consumer side of the vidya game industry. It perfectly shows the man-child tinged false-consciousness of the consumer-centric zeitgeist. Of all the things that are horrible and should be changed about the video game industry (mass layoffs, brutal crunch, fucked up practices that turn children into gambling addicts, the continued offshoring of massive amounts of work to underpaid workers in the developing world who have barely any worker rights, etc) this literal non-issue is what these (I hate using this term for its over usage but this perfectly describes these ppl) treatlerites see as the outstanding issue of our time. Also the fact they equate games to the status of living beings (that can be killed) is just fucking insane when a lot of the streamer voices jockeying this shit literally were and still are pro-genocide pro-Israeli dirtbags.

>>43327
>more e-celeb

>>43327
Games being discontinued or access revoked is adjacent to right to repair and is directly relevant to the question of property rights. Instead of recognizing the potential for opening people's minds to the class dynamics though you are just bitching.

>>43327
>ld be changed about the video game industry (mass layoffs, brutal crunch, fucked up practices that turn children into gambling addicts, the continued offshoring of massive amounts of work to underpaid workers in the developing world who have barely any worker rights, etc)
Half of the posts in this thread are throwing shade at this because of unreasonable skepticism towards citizen initiatives but you're like the only person here who thinks an ECI would be able to meaningfully address working conditions in Europe lol. At any rate anything that challenges if only a little bit encroaching IP rent seeking is OK by me because it's one of the biggest tentacles of monopoly capital

File: 1751688893818.jpg (13.14 KB, 200x200, George.jpg)

>>43333
>you're like the only person here who thinks an ECI would be able to meaningfully address working conditions in Europe
???, uh no I don't? Just pointing out the actual problems with the games industry is not endorsing or thinking the ECI is gonna do anything or can do anything, its just juxtaposing the cynical individualistic demands of the "gamers" who want their games not to be "destroyed" (even though its complete bs, no games are being destroyed and those that are unplayable are literally designed that way, every multiplayer game has a expiration date unless it has lan which is not gonna be how most of these games function today) vs the actual reality of the industry (something these gaymers are literally not a part of, the actual labor and production of games).
>At any rate anything that challenges if only a little bit encroaching IP rent seeking is OK by me because it's one of the biggest tentacles of monopoly capital
If you actually read the faq, they do not seek to challenge this at all. They don't want to end games as a service or even force a company to give up its IP. So there is no challenge to anything!
<No, we would not require the company to give up any of its intellectual property rights, only allow players to continue running the game they purchased.
They even undercut thier message by stating they think companies can end support to games whenever they want.
<We are in favor of publishers ending support for a game whenever they choose.
Its feckless treatler "we don't hate the corporation just their practices" slop.
<No, the market demand and profitability of these games means the video games industry has an ongoing interest in selling these. Since our proposals do not interfere with existing business models, these types of games can remain just as profitable, ensuring their survival.
Its total bs. Live service is the problem. Companies do not let buyers know they are technically renting a service rather than buying a game product. If that was made clearer, like how steam early access games let the consumers know that the game they buy might get abandoned, that can affect sales and eventual change on part of devs and publishers. Avoiding going after the profitability of such practices makes this "movement" a total wet dog fart.

>>43334
I think youre honestly a bit stupid in that you fail to recognize that the initiative is preempting obvious counters from game publishers. What's at stake is not "long term support" but purchases granting ownership of a commodity instead of the current legalese which only lends the user a license

>force a company to give up its IP. S

This is a stupid pipe dream that would be instantly dismissed, you're honestly retarded sorry

>>43298
What does a layoff have to do with it

i dont give a fuck about a genocide but dont touch muh video games

>>43337
You cannot do shit to stop genocide. You don't, no one with working morality has capability or willingness to stop it
You CAN however stop companies from touching bideo games

>>43334
>every multiplayer game has a expiration date unless it has lan
You have intellectual property brain worms. It's easy in principle to make source code public and let people who want to keep playing to run their own community servers.

>>43339
The goal is to make every Multiplayer game Counter strike 1.6 or Ragnarok online pretty much.

Woah it's bloodgasm, the Don Juan of Cyberpunk 2077! ( ˘ ³˘)♥

>>43180
God damn i hate that consooomer union so fucking much

Bloodgasm is right that the petition doesnt go nearly far enough, currently if some shitty consumer law gets enacted thanks to this most publishers will do the bare minimum and maybe only leave the launcher on lmao, maybe they will count that as a game. But porky is still scared shitless lmao, because further the down line the actual issue might be tackled (live service games and licenses) aka Steam and all those shitty drm infested storefronts. Although Steam might be targeted regardless in the EU due their essential monopoly on the pc gaming market.

>>43368
Also if we ignore the cooonsoome meme, the actual problem is games as a service (rent seeking) and games as a license, gacha slop etc…

>>43368
>Bloodgasm is right that the petition doesnt go nearly far enough
How could it go further without immediately getting throw out? Nothing is touching copyright, anon. And what is and is not acceptable state to leave the game in will be debated in Brussels and later on in courts

>>43370
>Nothing is touching copyright, anon
I never said that that

>>43371
Ok then what is the real problem?

>>43372
Trick question? Copyright obvs but in terms what is achievable via consumer protection (atleast theoretically although with a very low low chance) digital media being treated the same way physical media is treated. Again, super low chance but in theory, it would be possible, and it wouldnt infringe on copyright.

>>43382
>>43383
forcing companies to bundle the server binaries would be a huge boon to pirated games, especially old ones. i do think that the language should have been more specific in this regard, if there's any criticism to be made it's that, but it just so happens that doing this is the most cost-effective way of "preserving" games, so i'm cautiously optimistic about the whole thing.

>>43388
then go tell that to /meta/, so namefags can be banned once and for all.

>>43400
>Buy a rack of dvds and start handing burned discs out
most physical games these days are redeemed by code only, requiring to download online and you need a modded console to play ripped and burned games.

i propose a new movement: "kill more games"

let companies shut down old severs, but new ones too. as well as this, simply stop making new video games/consoles altogether, stop digital/physical distribution of older titles, and crack down on video game related piracy

>>43402
>most physical games these days are redeemed by code only, requiring to download online and you need a modded console to play ripped and burned games.
this is fine, most people buying physical media are just doing so for the sake of "collecting" so all those boxes can collect dust on their ikea shelves forever
