< God of War Trilogy Remake features a “new combat system,” says Kratos actor Christopher Judge

20 years ago people were making fun of the God of War games for being too simple and now they’re seriously considered "too technical". 13 years of over the shoulder "cinematic experiences" have fried gamers' brains

It's quite ironic that nowadays God of War and Halo are so closely associated with the gamerbro stereotype when at the time they were considered the bottom-feeder franchises of their respective genres and had a very bad reputation.

I can't really get mad at franchises that weren't all that great to begin with further being streamlined for the masses, they were kind of intended to be that way from the start. And in any case, under capitalism there's not a whole lot you can do to prevent it anyways, so it's best to stick to indies that actually have original ideas and some mid budget games that do the same, since you're more likely to find people just making games out of passion rather than for profit.

Meanwhile the old Tomb Raider games are much more technical but the protagonist is a hot lady so they are considered goonerslop by modern gamers.

It's going to be hilarious if they tone down the violence and remove the sex/nudity in the remakes completely neutering the reboot games commentary on how OG kratos used to be compared to how he's written now

only in retrospect after, like, Halo 3. At release time game critics treated Halo like the second coming of goldeneye 64

>>46119
Among the "hardcore" gaming crowd or places like /v/, Halo was always treated as a shooter for casual retards that killed the genre, this was especially true among the arena shooter crowd. Only in the mainstream was it ever treated as the greatest game ever conceived of.

>his was especially true among the arena shooter crowd
which would be odd because halo was a spiritual successor to marathon. spiritually, halo is a single player story driven boomer shooter with multiplayer tacked on. or in other words, the second coming of goldeneye 64. i just don't think they was any overlap between arena shooters and halo. also 4chan is two years younger than halo.

i do think that eventually halo fanboys were synonym with "xbox kids", but as i said, that was along the line, well after halo had been established as THE reason to buy an xbox. i remember it was one of the biggest anticipated releases, like it was ocarina of time levels of hype.

Well, they think that Halo killed hardcore, multiplayer, arena shooters because people would rather play Halo than deal with the autistic, arrogant, retards in these "hardcore" "NOT FOR CASUAL, SHITTERS" arena shooters. What they don't seem to realize is that even if Halo never existed people still wouldn't play arena shooters, the only reason games like Quake were popular for a time is because of the novelty and fad of them being something new that hadn't been done before which was namely, an actual working online game that actually felt somewhat ok to play. Once more easier games came out it didn't matter if it was going to be another shooter or not, hardcore arena shooters were always on burrowed time.

Halo was peak though (I didn't play god of war since no ps2)

>>46121
Halo was not at all a boomer shooter. Slow walking speed, weapon limit, the way the encounters are designed, it's very far from Doom/Quake.

>>46123
trvke. esreality idiots ask why their genre is dead then whenever a new game comes out they refuse to play it because it's not literally just quakeworld.

>>46153
Classic case of differences in quality adding up to a difference in kind. By all metrics halo is an arena shooter, but the adaptations to fit console controls make it obviously different.

The first modern shooter was Half-Life. Halo is also a modern shooter in every conceivable way.

>>46156
I'll say it. Halo is a better game than Half-Life. Half-Life had piss poor gunplay and was trying way too hard to have epic set-pieces to distract from how mid the core was.

>>46164
I'll disagree with that, I feel like a lot of the set piece fights in Halo are too simple and aren't all that exciting, limiting the amount of weapons you can carry to only two makes a lot of the fights feel the exact same, it doesn't help a lot of cooler weapons are sparse as well.

Half-life on the other hand gives you a lot more variety in how you approach encounters because of the selection of weapons it gives you. The main problem with Half-life is that most of the encounters take place in a corridor or small room and the AI is kind of dogshit so most of the enemies just decide to bumrush you which makes them easy to deal with.

>>46123
Didn't Counter-Strike kill arena shooters before Halo I dunno I just remember everyone and their dog playing it in the early 2000s.

>>46103
who the fuck is saying this. I've never heard anyone claim this once in my life

>>46164
I mean yeah the gunplay is subpar compared to like halo (not compared to say, quake or doom imo), but half life is the run-think-shoot game, not the shoot-shoot-shoot game. like its about the tactics!

CS was big when it was around but Quake 3 was still active with a decent player base. By the time Halo came out arena shooters were basically dead in the water with the last somewhat successful one being UT2004. Since then the genre has remained essentially dead with people sticking to Q3 updates like Live or QuakeWorld with some of the pros moving to Quake Champions (which was a major flop) because there was funding being put into it; but they all moved back to said Q3 updates once the pro-league ended and no more money was being invested into the game. But as was stated earlier in the thread Halo didn't really kill the genre, it was always going to fade from the public eye, it was only a question of when.
