I would say pretentious games are the ones who are pretending to be something they are not (duh). Like already mentioned David Cage games want to be a though provoking experiences with innovative gameplay, but instead end up a video game versions of Neil Breen movie. Or FPS games which advetise themselves hardcore old school boomer shooters, but have very superficial understanding of those games, and instead you get generic Painkiller clone with not enough pixels.
