>>34847You probably already know all of this but I'm gonna post it anyway. The notes in IJ are end notes, not footnotes. They are at the back of the book, not at the bottom of the page (foot of the page, foot notes). Not only is the flipping back and forth from the end of the book a tennis metaphor, but it's also purposely ripping you out of the immersion from reading. He does every trick he can to make you actively remember that you are reading a book, as the entire theme and purpose of the book is about addiction and entertainment. The reason you don't want to read the endnotes is the point he's trying to make. Take it as you will. Some of the endnotes are just definitions of drugs, but there are some end notes that are entire chapters to the book that you may have missed when you did it by audio book. It's all part of the puzzle like nature of the disassociation. I don't really recommend the book to people because it's pretentious and difficult and about things not everyone wants to read about. It's trapped in a 90's ethos too. The plot doesn't actually happen until the book is over. But when I finally got through it, it was during a time I really needed it.
