Ranking Justice League episodes because its 3 am and I wanna do something for fun after working on my coursework for all evening. Not doing Unlimited because the first two seasons are my childhood nostalgia but Unlimited is not.

Worst story - The Savage Time. This episode features WW2 and does not even once (!) mentions (!) Soviet Union. The burger "We wuz Nazi beaters!" self-fellating at its most egregious. Sucks this has to be the story that introduces Vandal Savage in DCAU.

23rd place - Fury. This story really wants to say something about gender and feminism… but, of course, turns out to be a complete worhless nothingburger that fails to even have a proper climatic battle.

22nd place - Secret Origins. A… passable pilot for the series, even though it visibly takes a massive dip towards mediocrity after the end of the first part.

21st place - Hearts and Minds. Too much sexual subtext for the children's show, period. The action is horrible and the setting is too big for the generic "villain of the week episode" (ironically, this is one story that probably could have worked better as a three-parter) Also is it just me, or are villains Islamophobic caricatures?

20th place - Secret Society. A typical "teamwork good" story, executed rather poorly. Most of the action in there looked like a circus show for me (though there were a couple of awesome moments). And did they really just… killed poor Clayface like that?

19th place - Metamorposis. It is a fun story, but what ruins it is a jarring fact that so much time is put into building Metamorpho's character that the only real way to justify it would be to add him as a League member at the end… and yet we never see him again until Unlimited.

18th place - Legends. Easily the most overrated DCAU story. Largely this story is just early 2000s capeshit writers jerking off to Silver Age capeshit writers… which has almost zero value to viewers outside of BurgerLand. Oh, and the Soviets are implicitly the real main villains in this.

17th place - Eclipsed. Really nice showcase of both full extent of Flash's powers and his character… and nice normalisation of USA imperialism in the Middle East.

16th place - A Better World. A facepalm-worthy soulless liberal propaganda about "dictatorship bad". At least Doomsday vs Justice Lords battle was excellently choreographed and Flash outsmarting Lord Batman was awesome.

15th place - Paradise Lost. The battle against Hades and his undead army was almost flawless and I love the showcase of Wonder Woman's lore and character in there. On the flipside, Faust is both OP and is killed in simultaneously the dumbest and most predictable way possible, and poor Hades is portrayed as Satan yet again.

14th place - War World. Better than the "Gladiator" movie it was ripping off, but still lame. Would have worked much better as a Superman the Animated Series story than as Justice League story.

13th place - The Brave and the Bold. Actually a superior showcase of Flash's character than "Eclipsed" despite being a season 1 story. And it doesn't normalise USA imperialism (if anything, it's the opposite there). Even if the concept of a civilisation of talking gorillas is silly.

To be continued…

12th place - Maid of Honor. Yeah, "wouldn't somebody think of the poor princess" may be cringy, but otherwise this is a really solid story with strong action, good characterisation of Wonder Woman, great buildup for Vandal Savage's arc and a nice recreation of the atmosphere of the Bond movies.

11th place - In Blackest Night. An attempt at courtroom drama in a superhero show, filled with plotholes and with a bit too abrupt conclusion, probably. However, this is a good introduction into Green Lantern lore for newcomers and the viewer really feels for poor John throughout the story.

10th place - Enemy Below. Superman yet again is turned into a wimp there… however, Aquaman being reimagined as gigachad more than makes up for it.

9th place - Knight of the Shadows. A GREAT character episode for Martian Manhunter, only slightly bogged down by some of the worst action scenes in the entire show and rather offensive handling of the great Merlin.

8th place - Injustice for All. The best story of season 1. Nice showcase of both heroes and villains, taking Lex Luthor's character arc in a fresh direction… and, of course, this is a Batman episode.

7th place - Comfort and Joy. An one-part long Christmas special. Well, it more than serves its purpose as a pre-Starcrossed filler?

6th place - Only a Dream. A nice "What do they fear?" episode, even though the prison riot portion of part 1 is somehow trite and soulless.

5th place - Wild Cards. This is largely a brainless action, but really, really well-made one. And this is the episode where Green Lantern and Hawkgirl finally kiss.

4th place - Terror Beyond. I mean, it does give Hawkirl some much-needed exposition outside of her romance with John Stewart, but also… the entire part 1 could have been avoided if Dr. Fate and Aquaman weren't such secretive douchebags for no reason.

3rd place - Tabula Rasa. AMAZO is too OP and this is that one story arc that is too "big" for TV show format and probably should have been a full-length animated movie instead. However, it is a real nice character episode for Martian Manhunter, and there are great action from everyone's side (including Lex Luthor's).

2nd place - Starcrossed. The great finale of the series, what else is there to say? *gasps* HAWKGIRL WAS A TRAITOR ALL ALONG! I, however, wish they dedicated this level of excellence to some of the "normal" episodes.

The best story - Hereafter. The best rendition of the "Lol Superman is dead" storyline in the franchise, great showcase of the personalties of the Leaugers, which then turns into a showcae of what a person Clark is behind his superpowers, which turns into unexpectedly touching redemption story for Vandal Savage.

Phew.
