It has military and surveillance applications. It is extremely useful for big data as well. There is a massive "cottage industry" around using AI for the various internet hustles. AI powers content creation of all sorts, from blogspam to SEO to Youtube. AI drives the development of computer speech and augmented reality.AI powers things from social media to Photoshop and graphic arts to programming tools or even the basic "code completion" in some editors. AI powers spam filters. AI powers robotics and factory sensors.
The other day one of those semi-propaganda articles described a practical application of AI where an experimental device learns the patterns of nerve activity, according to tasks like walking in a controlled environment, at one side of a spinal lesion. And tries to replicate them at the other side, bridging the gap somewhat.
AI is an industry with a breadth of applications which has a big dumb LLM facade that can't ever justify the amount of investment. So every time a Deepseek or a Mistral or the latest generative graphics model comes along and presents an improvement without draining the government's balls worth of billions of dollars, they have to pretend a great achievement has occurred.
