2. the group actually pushing this is Facebook, and it's because they want to NIMBY right-wing demands for age verification (Which, when you dig into it, is always who's pushing them.) by having them take place at the OS level rather than at the website level. FB is basically going "it would be too expensive or actively impossible to lobby against the encroachment of ID verification, so we should lobby for it but make it someone else's problem (in this case, Apple Mac OS/Microsoft Windows/Google Android's)", since Facebook doesn't make their own operating system.
   

The specific group pushing this law is the Digital Childhood Alliance (DCA), which Meta funds. (They also use it to push "app store accountability" - i.e. again making it Apple/Google/Microsoft's problem, but not Facebook's since Facebook is an app.)

and yeah I don't see how this helps feminists, or really, anyone other than major websites/platforms who don't want the responsibility of integrating some sort of age verification layer on their frontend. personally, it's a huge pain in the ass and it will be resisted and bypassed if people get pissed off enough about this.
