Private Medicare plans get a break
The average 2.48% pay increase for 2027 was on the high end of analysts' expectations and marked a win for UnitedHealthcare, Humana and other Medicare Advantage plans, whose stocks tumbled after the administration's initial proposal in January. The plans will instead see an average increase of nearly 5% when payments are adjusted to reflect how sick enrollees appear, Medicare officials said.

Members of neo-Nazi ‘active clubs’ join combat events at secretive Virginia compound
Social media posts and group chats show members of so-called active clubs from Texas, Tennessee and Pennsylvania have in recent weeks and months traveled to Lynchburg, Virginia, to train together at a secretive compound. The compound is run by the Wolves of Vinland, which the civil rights watchdog the Southern Poverty Law Center identifies as a neopagan white nationalist hate group. Also present were members of the white supremacist hate group Patriot Front and the neo-Nazi skinhead group known as the Hammerskins.

Traditionally, these funds ran directly to the Conservative Party – but after 15 years of using up every last drop of credibility, the financial stream started flowing in Labour’s direction. Sensing this, Labour readily sucked up to the City of London and promised to do their bidding. Lo and behold, in 2023, they received a record £13 million in individual donations! In 2024, the year of the general election, they also outraised all other parties. Just under two years later, Labour’s credibility has been wrecked, and Reform UK is now the party receiving the most donations from wealthy backers. In just the last three months of 2025, Farage’s party received over £5.4 million in large donations. £3 million of that came from one particular parasite – Christopher Harborne, a cryptocurrency investor and CEO of an offshore aviation company.

Another way to live: inside the fight for Prosfygika
On 5 February, 2026, Aristotelis Chantzis began a hunger strike to the death to defend his home from the latest development attempt that would result in the violent eviction of over 400 people. The next attack is imminent. Surrounded on either side by the police headquarters of Athens and the supreme court – two pillars of state power – the eight housing blocks that make up the squatted community of Prosfygika stand proud and unflinching – and always threatened. The neighbourhood is marked by a long history, both as a haven for refugees in Athens since the 1930s (Prosfygika means 'refugee homes' in Greek) and as a stronghold of partisan resistance in the December 1944 uprising, which left the blocks scarred by bullet holes. Today, the neighbourhood plays a key role in the fight against the ongoing state-backed gentrification of Athens. For most of the residents, living in Prosfygika is not a choice. It is imposed by the realities of housing in the city, which forces people without homes to squat. Many residents have lived in the neighbourhood all their lives, always on the brink of eviction. But they choose to live there on their own terms. In 2010, the residents of Prosfygika formed the Assembly of the Squatted Community of Prosfygika and dedicated themselves to a political project based on ‘the communal ownership of resources, structures and infrastructures'. They retook control of their own neighbourhood, which had been taken over by drugs and organised crime. Slowly, they turned the neighbourhood into a thriving community united by ‘a common political project, a common political culture and a common perspective’. This requires carefully thought-out systems.

Where V.I. Lenin in 1916 wove together a theory of imperialism that placed capitalist exploitation and accumulation at its core, explaining competition between greater and lesser powers and their coalitions and alliances as leading to war, a prominent Marxist, Karl Kautsky, asserted that war or the threat of war would persuade states to coexist, to put aside rivalries and create– in Kautsky’s words– “…a federation of the strongest, who renounce their arms race.” Lenin believed that competition between great powers will inevitably result in war; Kautsky believed that competition between great powers will inevitably bring a settled peace. Similarly, today’s advocates of multipolarity argue that the only obstacle to the world imagined by Kautsky is the United States. As the former Cold War leader of the capitalist order, the US is now the meddler, war monger, aggressor, and imperialist standing in the way of a multipolar world that will establish a more tolerant, cooperative, and peaceful world. Advocates see the agency for this Kautskyian utopia in the BRICS coalition, established formally in 2009, subsequently adding new members and partners along the way. Its supporters remind us that BRICS+ commands a greater share of global GDP than does the G7 nations or the EU. The original BRICS economies grew by a stunning 356.27% between 1990 and 2019. Despite these impressive economic numbers, BRICS’s most zealous proponents posture the alliance as representative of the peripheral “Global South” –as the arm of the ‘have-nots’– in the struggle against the ‘haves’ of the core– the US and its Eurasian allies. While this may make a soothing story, a popular source of hope for peace and social justice, it completely fails the test presented by the realities of this moment. Measured by any rigorous standards of inquiry, multipolarity is a fraud.
