I was not raised in an especially political or liberal environment, but it still does feel jarring hearing people at work call either an activity (such as going to the flea market or eating mexican food) "beaner shit" when we're all Mexicans from the notably Mexican part of town and there's probably a 50% chance of them doing the same when they were young or outside of work.
It unfortunately does make me think of them as dumber than me. I can't help but think they're deploying shit like that as a mechanism to separate themselves from other mexicans and bond with each other, in addition to it being a coping mechanism to deal with the reality of proletarianization of jobs like ours.
