Turkish independent union leader Başaran Aksu arrested
Aksu was arrested on charges of “spreading misleading information” and “inciting the public to hatred and enmity.” The political character and arbitrariness of the arrest is underscored by the claim that Aksu’s union activities, which meant he was not permanently residing at his registered address, gave rise to his “escape risk.”

Mali backs Morocco’s plan for disputed Western Sahara, ending support for the Sahrawi Republic
The Malian transitional government said Friday it was withdrawing its recognition of the pro-independence Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic as part of its backing for the Moroccan plan, which has growing support from African allies, the Trump administration in the U.S. and most European Union members. … The resolution referred to Morocco’s plan as a basis for negotiation. As with similar resolutions in previous years, the text made no mention of a referendum on self-determination that includes independence as an option, which is the solution long favored by the pro-independence Polisario Front and its allies, including Algeria, Russia, and China.

Immigration board denies Mahmoud Khalil’s appeal, bringing activist one step closer to deportation
Khalil said he was not surprised by the ruling, which he called “biased and politically motivated.” His attorneys said he cannot be lawfully detained or deported as he pursues a separate case in the federal court system. “The only thing I am guilty of is speaking out against the genocide in Palestine — and this administration has weaponized the immigration system to punish me for it,” Khalil said in a statement.

Democratic Socialists Win Court Battle as Elections Near
An investigation into effort, first reported by The New York Times, had wound through the State Board of Elections and courts for years. The D.S.A. maintained its innocence throughout, but had to raise funds to cover a $212,069 fine — a significant sum for a small organization. Now, the group will get that money back just in time for the 2026 primary season, when it is attempting to capitalize on Mr. Mamdani’s election as mayor of New York City to further expand its influence in the state capital.

Errico Malatesta: Reformism
The fundamental error of the reformists is that of dreaming of solidarity, a sincere collaboration, between masters and servants, between proprietors and workers which even if it might have existed here and there in periods of profound unconsciousness of the masses and of ingenuous faith in religion and rewards, is utterly impossible today. Those who envisage a society of well stuffed pigs which waddle contentedly under the ferule of a small number of swineherd; who do not take into account the need for freedom and the sentiment of human dignity; who really believe in a God that orders, for his abstruse ends, the poor to be submissive and the rich to be good and charitable — can also imagine and aspire to a technical organization of production which assures abundance to all and is at the same time materially advantageous both to the bosses and to the workers. But in reality “social peace” based on abundance for all will remain a dream, so long as society is divided into antagonistic classes, that is employers and employes. And there will be neither peace nor abundance.

The American War in Laos Still Claiming Victims 50 Years Later
In a remote village in the mountains of Xieng Khouang province in northern Laos a small temple is under construction. Its concrete walls are unpainted, and window and door frames sit unfinished. Inside the temple rests a 500-year-old golden Buddha statue, flanked by two columns of old brick. The statue’s eyes gaze outside at the rice paddies that surround the village. Out of sight of the Buddha’s field of vision is the original temple – now a large mound of bricks and rubble. A local shop owner says the temple was bombed during the war by the Americans. Another local resident is asked what else was bombed during the war. “Everything,” he says. “Everything.” Beyond the rubble, buried just below the surface across the vast mountain ranges and farmlands of Laos are millions of unexploded bombs, still claiming victims 50 years after the end of the war. Laos was caught in the crosshairs of the American-led global crusade against communism during the Cold War. The war in Vietnam engulfed neighboring Cambodia and Laos. Vietnamese communists were pushed across the border to escape the brutal bombing missions of the U.S. They built the expansive Ho Chi Minh trail which brought supplies, weapons, and troops from the north of Vietnam to the south.

Cost-of-living protests are coming — but can the left lead them?
MINISTERS are preparing for mass protests over the cost of living, with the Telegraph reporting “near-daily” Cabinet briefings on the likelihood that price spikes from the Iran war will cause serious discontent. We can already see such mass unrest in Ireland, where farmers and hauliers have blocked roads for days. The political character of these protests is up for grabs. The right blame fuel taxes and green energy policies for high prices. But cutting taxes and abandoning climate change commitments do not solve the root causes of the problem. In Britain these include the privatised energy sector which prioritises profits over the needs of households or industry, and has not bothered to invest in significant storage capacity to mitigate price shocks (Britain’s natural gas reserves would run dry in a few days if imports ceased, compared to three months for Germany). Globally they include continuing reliance on fossil fuels, which often have to be transported vast distances on routes vulnerable to geopolitical disruption, as we have seen during the US-Israeli war on Iran. The right’s “solutions” increase fossil fuel dependency and ignore the only way to set prices in line with public need — nationalisation of the energy sector. It is important that the left articulates clear demands for public ownership and price controls in the context of gathering discontent — and that it takes the lead in organising cost-of-living protests around such demands.
