>>2788397Because politics is fundamentally a personality test. Leftists tend to be high-openness and Japan has consciously defined itself as "foreign" yet refined, which makes it appealing and interesting. That it's also the only country as politically nightmarish as the United Kingdom isn't really here or there.
The UK is sort of the perfect test case for the opposite: American leftists and liberals used to look semi-fondly at the UK despite it being a literal monarchy because Britain was also a polite, refined cultural powerhouse which was a touch more socially progressive than the US. Tony Blair may have been a warmongering bastard, but at least he wasn't braindead homophobe like bush… Then Brexit happened and people realized Britain is actually more stupid, more racist, and more boorish than the US, and in a much worse way because the brainworms entirely dominate the ruling class. (unlike the US where libs are refined and cons are boors. see britain's raft of anti-trans policy based evidence pushed by a
labour government.)
It helps that Japan correctly understands that you can get away with a lot of horrible things if you're beautiful about it. It's a lot easier to be unapologetic for your war crimes when most people don't really remember that part, but do know you've got a peace constitution.
Here perhaps the Britain analogy tracks, since the government wants to rip it up in an act of self-harm instead of just stretching its definition further and further. There's very little in Japan's public image to make it an alienating cultural product to associate yourself with. Unfortunately, nobody's done one of those word-cloud surveys where you make the words bigger based on what people say, but imagine one for Japan: You'd have anime, manga, video games, cars, culture, sushi, polite, ally, and so on. Then think of Britain: royal family (believe it or not: positive), accent, london, bad food, bad teeth, brexit, TERF island,
maybe heritage.
Now ask yourself: which of those would you rather be associated with? "But they did war crimes ages ago and aren't sorry about it!" - yeah, that's true
of both, though I will accept Japan's look worse because they weren't fighting for the good guys, but I'm not asking who you'd sell F-35s to, am I? I'm asking which set of words you think make you look better.
(This is also why /leftypol/ pretends to hate Japan, because everyone knows China doesn't like Japan and pretending to adhere to Chinese values makes you look better on /leftypol/)
