The SPLC was pocketing money to enrich the higher ups yeah. I think they could get information about right-wing groups by paying informants which they'd publish, but the SPLC was founded by Morris Dees who was an Alabama lawyer who made millions from a direct-mail marketing business back in the 1960s and then went into civil rights law. From there he built up the SPLC into an organization that bankrupted far-right groups in civil suits after they screwed up (which happens a lot), but they made most of their money by aggressively seeking donations from aging liberals (also celebrities) who they'd try to scare the bejesus out of. Dees was eventually forced out by the SPLC's board for various things, toxic workplace stuff, sexual harassment. There was a weird dialectic between the SPLC and the hate groups they arrayed themselves against, because if the hate groups went away then the SPLC would also go out of business.

Well the DOJ is alleging that and rightoids are using that to make the claim that the left are the "real" racists. But I don't care what the DOJ thinks, the SPLC did pocket money and I'm speculating a little bit that some of the people they were paying (the indictment apparently says it was eight people) were probably snitches who were also feeding information to the SPLC. It's also the case there will be some dissident right-wing types who will be uneasy about the indictment because it's giving every boomertarded pro-Israel Fox News rightoid a reason to dismiss the alt-right groups as created by the SPLC. Also what the fuck is Kash Patel talking about? Is he saying they defrauded George Clooney and they paid snitches in hate groups in the pursuit of the goal that Clooney gave them money to pursue? The SPLC is a racket but what's the actual crime here. They over-hyped the purported threat of Matt Heimbach???

The Southern Poverty Law Center was absolutely not "funding right-wing extremist groups." Even if you take Trump's DoJ at its word (even though it has openly acted as a servant of the Trump regime and doesn't even pretend to be an impartial law enforcement agency), what they're ultimately accusing the SPLC of doing is paying informants infiltrating hate groups (and thereby supposedly giving money to hate groups by some technicality they're trying to spin up.)

So, the charges are mostly bullshit even by the abyssal standards of the Trump DoJ.

The SPLC is basically like the Southern version of the ACLU, and for this reason alone right-wingers hate it and this is a brazen attempt to bury it (along with the fact that the SPLC defines a significant chunk of the right as hate groups, which its right about.)

I think that was the original idea but a lot of the problems that leftists (progressives etc.) have had with them is that they got out of a lot of that business a long time ago. At least I read they started out doing civil liberties defense and then turned into a counter-right watchdog and dropped the ACLU-like stuff. The amount of money they were bringing in was really enormous and they were pretty brazen – this would've been when Dees was in charge – in spending a lot on marketing to raise more money from the libs. A lot of non-profit groups do some grifting to pay their management but even a lot of progressives in the non-profit world were like sh'yeah the SPLC is grifting pretty hard including former employees. They'd hire journalists and some of them have quit and written critical articles about their own experience. The SPLC has a building in Montgomery and some of their employees have gone on strike.

That's also a different matter from what the DOJ is alleging they did and what narrative the right is going to try and spin out of this.

It's kinda funny that people who deny the holocaust are the ones getting accused of being behind conspiracies in Charlottesville.
