Campaigners across the world demand governments impose permanent windfall taxes on fossil fuel profits
Organised by the 350.org campaign, demonstrations took place in countries including Japan, Indonesia, France, Canada, Turkey, Brazil and Australia, calling for an end to fossil fuel dependence and the provision of affordable renewable energy for all. The group warned that fossil fuels “receive an estimated $12 trillion (£8.8trn) annually in implicit and explicit subsidies worldwide, including the unpriced costs of pollution, climate damage and public health impacts.

UK terror watchdog urges 'moratorium' on pro-Palestine marches
The coalition said: "We condemn unequivocally these attacks, as we do all forms of anti-semitism and racism. No one should be attacked for their race or religion. "However, the attempts by Hall, sections of the media and some politicians to connect such attacks with the Palestine marches are wrong." Stop the War added: "These marches are supported by many Jewish people who attend. They are not the ‘hate marches’ described by right-wing politicians but expressions of solidarity and support for those under attack. "The aims to criminalise the protests, whichs reflect majority public opinion in this country," the organisation said, "or worse, to connect them with racist or terrorist attacks being carried out against Jewish people, are scurrilous and should be rejected."

‘Act of piracy’: World reacts to Israeli interception of Gaza aid flotilla
Israel has intercepted 22 out of the 58 aid ships travelling through international waters and bound for the besieged Gaza Strip. … The vessels were seized by Israel late on Wednesday in international waters off Greece’s Peloponnese Peninsula, hundreds of miles from Gaza, the flotilla’s organisers said on Thursday. Israel “kidnapped” 211 of the 400 activists taking part in the flotilla, including a Paris city councillor, according to the flotilla’s organisers. Israel’s Foreign Ministry had earlier put the number of those detained at 175.

US may deploy new hypersonic missile against Iran as Trump weighs fresh strikes: Report
Centcom made the request to the Department of War based on intelligence that Iran has moved its ballistic missile launchers out of range of the US’s Precision Strike Missile, a supersonic surface-to-surface ballistic missile fired from a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System. If Centcom’s request for the Dark Eagle hypersonic missile is approved, it would mark the first time the long-delayed weapon is deployed, and potentially used, should the US resume attacking Iran. The missile has a reported range of more than 2,776 kilometres.

Hundreds march in Johannesburg against illegal migration as shops shut over looting fears
As one of Africa’s most industrialized economies, South Africa attracts migrants —both those who entered the country legally and illegally in search of opportunities. The protests in Johannesburg resulted in the closure of many shops, owned by both locals and migrants, due to fears of potential looting or opportunistic crimes. Organized by the anti-immigration group March and March, it also attracted similar organizations, including Operation Dudula and political parties ActionSA and Patriotic Alliance.

Canada to create powerful financial crimes agency as US weakens its approach
The new agency, tasked with investigating and prosecuting financial crimes, is the result of a public inquiry that found Canada lacked a cohesive strategy against money laundering, placing it behind its international peers. Jessica Davis, a former intelligence analyst with Canada’s spy agency who focuses terrorism and illicit financing, said: “The fact we’re actually seeing the creation [of a] new enforcement agency is a meaningful investment and hopefully signals the understanding of the seriousness of the challenge.”

Brazil prosecutors launch suit against meatpacking giant JBS over beef tied to slavery-like labor
The civil action suit before a labor court in the northern Brazilian state of Para seeks nearly 119 million reais (about $24 million) in compensation, an amount prosecutors say reflects the total value of transactions between JBS and the suppliers. According to the filing, 53 workers were rescued from properties owned by seven ranchers who supplied the meatpacking company between 2014 and 2025. Those employers were listed in Brazil’s official public registry of companies found to have subjected workers to conditions that are similar to slavery, prosecutors said.

Thousands expected to protest, march across WA on May Day
Calls for better pay and working conditions typically shape the annual protests. This year’s priority, Rubio said, will be sending government officials a “real clear message” to stop supporting or investing in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and the federal administration’s “massive deportation machine.”

US reinstates ‘gun show loophole’ amid rollback of firearms restrictions
The new plans also include rescinding a 2023 rule that restricted pistol braces, an attachment that enables the shooter to hold the weapon against their shoulder like a rifle. A federal court had already struck down that rule. “Nothing we are doing today weakens law enforcement,” Blanche added.

Mills Suspends Flailing US Senate Bid, Clearing Platner’s Path to Nomination
Mills’ decision to suspend her campaign came less than a week after she vetoed a bill passed by the Maine Legislature that would have imposed a statewide moratorium on building artificial intelligence data centers. Mitch Jones, the managing director of litigation for Food & Water Watch, described Mills’ veto of the data center moratorium as symbolic of her out-of-touch Senate campaign, saying “it is no wonder” that the Maine governor’s “political career seems to be limping to a feeble conclusion.”

Ohio let counties ban solar. In Richland, it’s now on the ballot
Supporters of the ban say the issue is about preserving farmland. Opponents say it’s about property rights and government overreach. And notably, neither side is offering solar power as a bulwark against climate change, even as domestic oil and gas production hits record levels and the past 11 years have all been the warmest on record for the planet, according to the World Meteorological Organization.

Six transgender residents sue Idaho over strict new bathroom ban
The law, which goes into effect in July, is the strictest bathroom ban in the nation, subjecting people to time behind bars if they knowingly enter a bathroom, locker room or changing area that does not correspond with their sex assigned at birth — even if the bathroom is in a privately owned business. Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor and sentenced to a year in jail for a first offense, or a felony with up to five years in prison for a second offense.

It Used to Really Matter When People Fired Guns at Presidents
It’s an odd thing to wake up on a Monday after a weekend in which someone tried to assassinate the president of the USA, and feel absolutely nothing about it. As far as I know, the Washington Hilton doesn’t specialise in mogadon-laced mojitos. So, odder still to spend your Sunday reading reports of the gunfire at the hotel’s ballroom on Saturday night, only to find the press – many of whom were present at the White House Correspondents Dinner taking place at the time – going through the motions of reporting with all the passion of an ambien-zombie on a 2am fridge-raid. Meanwhile, online, people went berserk, pumping out oceans of theory on the basis of camera angles, slow-motion presidential micro-expressions and the alleged shooter’s slim LinkedIn profile. And maybe that’s what’s behind the detachment with which we encounter what ought to be a pretty big deal. We’re not dead inside (yay). But we’re drowning in meaning, smothered in significance, much of it deliberate, and from every angle. A glance across a coffee shop from a stranger? A gunshot across a ballroom from a danger? Bro, everything is romantic.

Art, alienation, and revolution
In day-to-day life under capitalism and class society, the vast majority of people feel alienated from society, including from its greatest art and culture. In a revolution, all of this changes and is upended, as the masses move to change society. Consequently, in every revolution, there is almost always a corresponding artistic expression of ordinary people’s desire for freedom and a life worth living. The French Revolution, as Russian Marxist Georgi Plekhanov remarked, made art a matter for the masses, and not just the ruling class. The numerous holidays, processions, and celebrations based on the ideas of the revolution stand testament to that. The Russian Revolution did the same thing, by throwing open the doors to art and culture for the masses who had never before experienced it. The entire country, including the peasantry, was swept up in an “epidemic” of theatre, and agitprop trains brought sight and sound to people who had no experience of any form of art. Bourgeois critics and academics, who are the gatekeepers of art and culture in all class societies, never fully recognise or acknowledge the connection between art and revolution. And where they do, it is at most a begrudging admission that some of the greatest art known to humanity is the direct product of revolutions. But why do these trends emerge? Why is there a link between revolution and art?

Rosa Luxemburg: The Idea of May Day on the March (1913)
The sign under which this whole development, both economic and political, has been consummated, the formula back to which its results point, is imperialism. This is no new element, no unexpected turn in the general historical path of the capitalist society. Armaments and wars, international contradictions and colonial politics accompany the history of capitalism from its cradle. It is the most extreme intensification of these elements, a drawing together, a gigantic storming of these contradictions which has produced a new epoch in the course of modern society. In a dialectical interaction, both cause and effect of the immense accumulation of capital and the heightening and sharpening of the contradictions which go with it internally, between capital and labor; externally, between the capitalist states – imperialism has opened the final phase, the division of the world by the assault of capital. A chain of unending, exorbitant armaments on land and on sea in all capitalist countries because of rivalries; a chain of bloody wars which have spread from Africa to Europe and which at any moment could light the spark which would become a world fire; moreover, for years the uncheckable specter of inflation, of mass hunger in the whole capitalist world – all of these are the signs under which the world holiday of labor, after nearly a quarter of a century, approaches. And each of these signs is a flaming testimony of the living truth and the power of the idea of May Day.
