Cambodia’s new conscription law takes effect in wake of conflict with Thailand
The new law consists of eight chapters and 20 articles, replacing a 2006 statute that was never implemented and was considered outdated. It now requires Cambodian men aged 18 to 25 to serve two years in the military, while women may serve voluntarily. Individuals summoned for service must appear within 30 days of receiving notice or be considered as evading duty, unless a valid excuse is provided.

Myanmar military steps up fight for rare earth area and border routes
At a meeting last week, Ye Win Oo told soldiers that the military had secured Falam town in Chin State and an arterial route between Mandalay and Myitkyina in Kachin State, the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported. "The military's strategic rationale is that they need to regain control over the primary communication and trade routes in Myanmar," said Myanmar analyst Sai Kyi Zin Soe.

US rushes construction of “Pax Silica weapons hub” in Tarlac
US Undersecretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg arrived in the Philippines on May 18 and went to Tarlac to inaugurate the project. With Philippine officials from the Department of Trade and Industry and Bases Conversion and Development Authority, they formally unveiled the marker for the planned 4,000-acre (1,620 hectares) “economic security zone.” The US considers this eco-security zone the first “AI-native industrial acceleration hub” under Pax Silica. More than 20 large American companies have already signaled plans to invest in it. The zone is exclusive to US companies and its invited allies.

Israel’s occupation of Gaza, Lebanon, Syria extends beyond what maps show
In southern Lebanon, the investigation looked at the military zone declared by Israel following a subsequent ceasefire agreement with that country, before examining what satellite imagery shows as the actual situation in impacted villages and towns. As for southern Syria, where no similar official Israeli map exists, we looked at fixed military outposts beyond the “Alpha Line” that separates the occupied Golan Heights from the rest of Syria.

State news agency IRNA and Fars news agency said "full international internet connectivity has been restored" for users of fixed broadband services, but this had not been confirmed by internet monitor NetBlocks. Witnesses inside Iran also told AFP that mobile internet remains cut but home internet with Wi-Fi had been restored, even though VPNs were still needed to access some social media.

Haftar's forces arrest Gaza aid convoy in Libya
According to a statement published by the Global Sumud Convoy Instagram page, last contact with the activists was made at 3.22pm on Tuesday. "The detained are civilians from Spain, Poland, the USA, Argentina, Uruguay, Portugal, Tunisia, and Italy - doctors and human rights defenders who volunteered to deliver aid and stand with the Palestinian people," said the statement. They said the convoy had entered the 5+5 security zone - a contested area established under the Libyan ceasefire agreement signed in October 2020 - to negotiate safe passage to the Gaza Strip. "They were detained by a security force affiliated with the Libyan Arab Armed Forces (LAAF) and are still being held by Eastern Libyan authorities (GNS)," they added.

Senegal's ousted prime minister Sonko elected parliament speaker
Senegal's parliament elected Ousmane Sonko as its speaker on Tuesday, days after President Bassirou ‌Diomaye Faye fired him as prime minister amid a deepening rift over the government's reform agenda and how to resolve a worsening debt crisis. Political analysts said the speaker position could give the former premier, who was ousted on Friday, a platform to challenge Faye, though Sonko moved to downplay that prospect.

Former PM Tsipras looks to unite Greece’s fragmented opposition with new party
The erratic, 51-year-old Tsipras styled his new “Elas” party as a move to unite the left beyond his original far-left base although he has — somewhat controversially — taken the name from the army of the communist resistance movement in World War II. He unveiled his new project in a 40-minute speech in central Athens, with the illuminated Acropolis as a backdrop, greeting thousands of supporters as “comrades” and “friends.” “Our declaration today marks the beginning of a new collective effort to create a broad progressive alliance,” he said, adding the new party would embrace “the radical left, social democracy and political ecology.”

As US stock market hits new highs, 2 of 3 Americans are cutting back on spending, survey shows
A separate gauge of consumer sentiment released last week by the University of Michigan fell to a record low this month. Soaring gas and food costs have worsened inflation that is outpacing the average growth in paychecks, reducing most Americans’ purchasing power. Americans have soured on President Trump’s economic policies, polls show, potentially creating problems for Republicans heading into the midterm elections.

Trump officials to send Ebola-exposed Americans to Kenya rather than bring them home: NYT
The Trump administration wants to send U.S. citizens living abroad who are exposed to the deadly Ebola virus to Kenya rather than bring them home, according to new reporting by the New York Times. Trump administration proposes NDAs for federal workers to crack down on leaks to journalists
Former government employees would need "written permission from an authorized agency official" to speak to journalists about information the Trump administration deems "confidential" after leaving their jobs, according to the draft. Former employees who violate that rule could face civil and criminal penalties, according to the draft. The U.S. government would be entitled to all "royalties" that employees receive from disclosing information that violates the agreement, according to the draft. The OPM did not immediately offer further explanation.

Texas Senate runoff sees surge of anti-Muslim rhetoric in campaign ads
Specifically, Paxton and Paxton-allied groups ran ads accusing Cornyn of supporting “Muslim mass immigration” and having “a special place in his heart for radical Islam”. Cornyn, meanwhile, has responded by emphasizing his record “fighting radical Islamic extremism” and drafting a bill aimed at “[stopping] the spread of Sharia Law in the U.S.” Even though the Senate campaign will come to an end with the 26 May election, Texas Muslims say Republican politicians are fanning the flames of anti-Muslim bigotry that’s already been at the center of many racist incidents in Texas.

California chemical tank threat not over yet for 16,000 people still under evacuation orders
the risk of a smaller explosion or potential spill kept orders in place for about a third of the evacuees. Many are living out of hotel rooms, tents, emergency shelters at schools or staying with family or friends. Isabel Mendez was among those still waiting to return to her mobile home. She said she broke out in a rash on her face and developed tingling lips and a sore throat while evacuating last week. After spending several expensive nights in a hotel, she is now staying with her mother in the Los Angeles area.

France: Statement by Nikos Maziotis for Evening of Support for Anarchist Prisoners
From Domokos prison in Greece, anarchist prisoner Nikos Maziotis sent a message of solidarity on the occasion of the Let’s Make a Front evening organized by Secours Rouge Toulouse in support of anarchist prisoners around the world.
"Dear comrades, thank you for inviting me to the event you are organizing and I send you a big hug. I also send a big hug to all detainees, revolutionaries, anarchists, anti-capitalists around the world. There is a direct link between the struggle and solidarity for the release of political prisoners and the revolutionary struggle for the overthrow of the international system of state and capital. As we used to say here in the past, whoever forgets the prisoners of social and class war also forgets the war itself. However, unfortunately, the relationship between solidarity, imprisoned activists and the fight against the state and capital is not obvious and does not apply in many cases to at least some of those who define themselves as a movement. Regarding solidarity, speaking of the Greek space, there are all kinds of divisions regarding the position towards imprisoned activists. Divisions linked to the differentiation between legal and illegal means of struggle, armed struggle and urban guerrilla warfare, their defense or the invocation of their innocence. …"

The international significance of Erdoğan’s preemptive coup against the CHP in Türkiye
The regime of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Türkiye is staging a preemptive political coup before the eyes of the entire world. Erdoğan first removed the elected leadership of the Republican People’s Party (CHP)—the main parliamentary opposition party and leading party in the polls—through a politically motivated court ruling, then ordered riot police to forcibly seize the party’s headquarters. What is unfolding in Türkiye is not a purely national event but a manifestation of an international collapse of democratic forms of rule rooted in the deepening crisis of the capitalist system. US President Donald Trump, having lost the November 2020 elections, mounted a failed coup on January 6, 2021, seeking to remain in power illegally. Erdoğan, for his part, is attempting to forestall a likely defeat in the next elections by neutralizing his principal rival. Workers and youth must oppose this preemptive coup—which threatens fundamental democratic rights and whose target is ultimately the working class.

Amadeo Bordiga. The Filling and Bursting of Bourgeois Civilisation
The floods in the Po valley and the confused debate over their causes and over the responsibility of organisations and public bodies that did not know how to carry out protection work, with all the disgusting mutual accusations of “speculating” on misfortune, puts into question one of the most widespread false opinions shared by all the contenders. This is that contemporary capitalist society, with the corresponding development of science, technology and production, places the human species in the best possible position to struggle against the difficulties of the natural environment. Hence the contingent fault of the government or of Party A and B, which lies in not knowing how to exploit this magnificent potential at hand, and in the erroneous and culpable administrative and political measures. Hence the no less classic: “Move over, I want to take over now!” If it is true that the industrial and economic potential of the capitalist world is increasing and not diminishing, it is equally true that the more virulent it is, the worse the living conditions of the human mass are in regards to natural and historical cataclysms. Unlike the periodic spates of rivers, the spate of frenetic capital accumulation knows no perspective of a “decrease”, of a falling curve from the hydrometer readings, but only the catastrophe of the river banks bursting.
