Estimates vary widely, with some suggesting up to 17 million slaves to the coast of the Indian Ocean, the Middle East, and North Africa. Abolitionist movements began to grow during the 19th century, prompted by both Muslim reformers and diplomatic pressure from Britain. The first Muslim country to prohibit slavery was Tunisia, in 1846.

In all seriousness, I was raised in a household that was entirely secualr. some family had superficial religious beliefs, but they never made an attempt to impress them on me. I might have ended up with some tangential neuroses indirectly, but my outlook has always been a secular one. atheistic, ignostic even.
That being said, Islam is the only faith that I have ever held any sincere respect or reverence for. Christianity, Judaism, I don't think I even need to speak on. Hinduism has a caste system. Zoro is reactionary or so I've been told and I have good reason to trust. Even faiths like Buddhism which claim a sense of universality and whose acolytes posture as humble and compassionate individuals, as many are, has its share of reactionary fanatics.

When I was coming up, the atmosphere was one of insidious lies about Islam and Muslims and brown people overall. When I discovered the internet as a child, there was like a month where I believed that Islam was evil because I was told that the Quran preached dominance over women.
The reality that I discovered over time was that the only Muslims that could be considered to be zealots or violent fanatics were incredibly miniscule sects of lunatics flushed with cash and guns by the CIA and fucking Mossad.
And as I developed and refined my political consciousness, I came to see that Islam has been one of the most uniting and empowering tendencies of philosophy and religion to ever grace the earth. Whether it is the Iranian Revolution, or the Islamic Resistance in Palestine and Lebanon, or even the Moro tribesmen of the Philippines who resisted western colonization attempts, I can say with sincerity and without any hesitation that Islam almost without fail been a force that dignifies and empowers all its most oppressed adherents. One of justice and emancipation.
I don't think I will ever be capable of comprehending the world in spiritual terms, and I don't really have any desire to, but I will never utter a word to disparage the faith and those who practice it. I carry a copy of the Quran in my glovebox even. Maybe if I am ever in a tight spot, I will crack it open and finally read some of the passages I have been recommended. Maybe I should do it now even.
Another phenomenon that at this point is indisputable, is that Islam has been an ever greater force for liberation than Communism for the past 40 years or so. I don't view it as a good thing or a bad thing, and I am still a Communist myself, but they are lapping us over and over.
I wish there were a way to have some interfaith/tendnecy dialogue without Marxists turning their noses up at those who choose to accept Allah and derive inspiration and a sense of dignity and agency from it.

I have heard that Arabic does not translate to English so well, and that reading the texts in English, there is a lot of value that is lost.
From what I have heard, Arab music is great, and in some aspects it is entirely unqiue from the western tradition.
