Ecuadorian Environmental Defender Found Dead After Reporting Corruption and Threats
For at least a year, Silva-Koniuszek had been denouncing the irregular sale of more than 700 hectares in the Capaes area, where the land was sold without a public auction in 2022 by then-Mayor Otto Vera Palacios for US$6.2 million. The case gained prominence because the transaction allegedly involved the administration of La Libertad Mayor Francisco Tamariz.

Final countdown to defuse protests against Mexican government ahead of World Cup opening game
Only 24 hours remain before the World Cup kicks off in Mexico and the country is going though its final dress rehearsals. Preventing demonstrations on opening day is already a pipe dream: negotiations with teachers have stalled and search groups will march to make their missing relatives visible.

Global Union Urges Sanctions on Myanmar Regime Over Labor Abuses
The junta has moved to dismantle labor protections, scrapping tripartite mechanisms between workers, employers and the government, while cracking down on trade unions and jailing or exiling labor activists. Addressing the ILC, IndustriALL general secretary Atle Høie stressed that around 450,000 garment workers in Myanmar earn under US$100 a month—about half the living wage. He said factories operating under martial law expose workers to military checkpoints, harassment, unpaid overtime and the threat of forced conscription.

CITU Blames ‘Serious Lapse’ by RINL Management in Following SOPs That Led to Blast Killing 9 Workers
In a statement, CITU flayed the Central government for “hurriedly” issuing an official release terming the accident as a “fire accident”. This “is not wholly factual and smacks of evasion of responsibility and accountability. Such horrible accident took place basically owing to gross violation of and compromise in the “STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE(SOP)” which is integrally linked with the basic preventive safety norms in such an extremely hazard-prone steel production process,” CITU said in its statement.

Israel MPs in bid to exempt ultra-Orthodox from conscription
According to its preamble, the proposed legislation "seeks to enshrine in a Basic Law the status of Torah study as a fundamental value of the Jewish people's heritage". Basic Laws carry constitutional weight in Israel and require a simple majority of 61 out of 120 lawmakers to pass a third reading. The bill also proposes that "the State of Israel recognise individuals who commit to devoting themselves to Torah study over an extended period as performing a meaningful service for the benefit of the state and the Jewish people".

GMB members march through Blackpool after Labour waters down plans help school support staff
The leaders of Unison, GMB and Unite slammed the Department for Education’s push for the mass academisation of schools without a long-promised national framework for job evaluations and pay on Tuesday. Unions say the lack of a framework will put hundreds of thousands of school support staff at risk of fragmented “free-for-all” employment practices and put academies at risk of equal pay claims.

Politically motivated crimes in Germany reach record high
“The majority of crimes were committed by right-wing and far-right perpetrators, which once again demonstrates that the greatest danger currently stems from far-right extremism,” Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said in Berlin on Tuesday after presenting an annual report on crimes motivated by political ideology. Yet, he said far-left actors were responsible for the largest increase in violent crimes, with offenses attributed to left-wing extremist ideology up by about 42 percent. That surge, said Dobrindt, underscores the “growing threat” posed by the “far-left scene.”

US railroad CSX plans to reduce human track inspections following government waiver
This technology, used in conjunction with human visual inspections, can be used to greatly increase railway safety and reduce derailments, which currently occur at a rate of roughly three times a day in the United States. Instead, they are being used to cut jobs on behalf of profit. Not all track defects are detectable by ATI. A CSX track inspector told the World Socialist Web Site: “The automated systems can only inspect the track they run on, and due to logistical reasons, dispatchers route these trains down the same tracks every time. My territory has passenger traffic, and two additional tracks that the automated systems will never run across.

Cops Keep Getting Arrested for Using Flock to Stalk People
For months during the summer of 2024, Jarmarus Brown, an Orange City, Florida police officer, ran his ex-girlfriend's license plate through the Flock automated license plate reader (ALPR) system lookup database at least 69 times. He searched for the license plate belonging to her mom at least 24 times, and searched for the license plate belonging to her dad at least 15 times. Brown’s searches were happening so often, and were so commonplace, that even one of his colleagues noticed Brown researching his ex-girlfriend's whereabouts while the law enforcement officers sat in their police cruisers, according to court records obtained by 404 Media.

Florida lawsuit alleges wrongful arrest after police AI facial recognition error
According to the Jacksonville Beach police department, an algorithm returned a 93% probability that Robert Dillon was the man caught on security cameras at a McDonald’s in the town attempting to persuade the unaccompanied girl, aged younger than 12, to leave with him. Dillon, however, lives in Fort Myers, more than 300 miles and a five-hour drive away, and told detectives he had never been to Jacksonville Beach in his life.

As Portland teachers receive layoff notices, union raises objections
PPS administrators have been wrestling with a tight budget and have signaled for months that eliminating teaching positions — including through layoffs — would be necessary. But the just-announced layoffs may violate the Portland Association of Teachers’ contract with PPS, according to union leaders.

Germany Is Staging Its Own Palestine Action ‘Show Trial’
Germany is prosecuting five activists alleged to be part of Palestine Action Germany in what their lawyers have described as a “show trial” intended to stigmatise protesters “as [if they were] terrorists” and which legal experts argue shows a “deeply concerning development” in how the state is targeting political protest. The so-called Ulm 5, who are from the UK, Germany, Spain and Ireland, are currently on trial at a high-security court at Stammheim prison in Stuttgart following a break-in at offices of the Israeli arms firm Elbit Systems in Ulm, southwestern Germany, in September 2025. The defendants face charges of trespassing, property damage and using the symbols of a proscribed organisation. They have also been charged with belonging to a criminal organisation under Section 129 of the German Criminal Code – a controversial piece of legislation human rights lawyers say is being used to “blur the line between organised crime and the legitimate exercise of people’s freedom of assembly and expression” such that the case will “have a chilling effect on others who are considering engaging in political protest”.

Factory Occupation at Fiat – An excerpt from “March 1973. Red Flags at Mirafiori”
“The moment the struggle becomes your own, it’s a moment of proletarian celebration, where everyone manages to find their own identity; they’re no longer cogs in a machine, they’re a series of minds coordinating and directing themselves and others. Otherwise, what would be the point of occupying a factory?“ We translated this text by Chicco Galmozzi, originally published by Machina. You can watch a longer interview with Chicco Galmozzi here:[https://www.labournet.tv/en/videos/Chicco]. He was a worker and activist with Lotta Continua. In 1974, he participated in the founding of the Communist Committees for Workers’ Power linked to the newspaper “Senza Tregua”, and in 1976 he was among the founders of Prima linea. Arrested in May 1977, he earned his high school diploma and college degree during his twelve years in prison. The following account can be read in unison with this longer text by the political committees at Siemens, Pirelli and Alfa Romeo, who formed around the same time as the occupation at Fiat Mirafiori took place. For a UK context you can also read this account written by a comrade, who took part in the occupation of the aerospace factory where he worked in 1974.

Errico Malatesta: Anarchism and Organization
Organization which is, after all, only the practice of cooperation and solidarity, is a natural and necessary condition of social life; it is an inescapable fact which forces itself on everybody, as much on human society in general as on any group of people who are working towards a common objective. Since humanity neither wishes to, nor can, live in isolation it is inevitable that those people who have neither the means, nor a sufficiently developed social conscience to permit them to associate freely with those of a like mind and with common interests, are subjected to the organization by others, generally constituted in a class or as a ruling group, with the aim of exploiting the labor of others for their personal advantage. And the agelong oppression of the masses by a small privileged group has always been the result of the inability of the oppressed to agree among themselves to organize with others for production, for enjoyment and for the possible needs of defense against whoever might wish to exploit and oppress them. Anarchism exists to remedy this state of affairs … Now, it seems to us that organization, that is to say, association for a specific purpose and with the structure and means required to attain it, is a necessary aspect of social life. A human being in isolation cannot even live the life of a beast, for they would be unable to obtain nourishment for themselves, except perhaps in tropical regions or when the population is exceptionally sparse; and they would be, without exception, unable to rise much above the level of an animal. Having therefore to join with other humans, or more accurately, finding themselves united to them as a consequence of the evolutionary antecedents of the species, they must submit to the will of others (be enslaved) or subject others to his/her will (be in authority) or live with others in fraternal agreement in the interests of the greatest good of all (be an associate). Nobody can escape from this necessity. Admitting as a possibility the existence of a community organized without authority, that is without compulsion – and anarchists must admit the possibility, or anarchism would have no meaning – let us pass on to discuss the organization of the anarchist movement.
