This purity testing is why no one likes lefties. It's like with vegetarians, most people eat meat and wild because they always have. You should first argue for organic slightly more ethical meat that's higher quality and tastes better to be the standard (like idk kosher) instead of just larping that everyone should instantly become strictly vegan right now because of a Facebook post.

Entryism does not work, humans are social animals whether we like it or not we slowly morph into the group of people we hang out with the most, so instead of turning them all to your ideology, they'll turn you to theirs.

They will reject you for being related to someone gay, if your politics don't align with theirs and you try to approach the levers of power they will obliterate you, outlaw your businesses, arrest you on trumped up charges, I've seen these creepy old dudes run one of their own out of town because they loosely associated with someone who could be interpreted as a liberal and if you're not one of the richy rich boys it gets nastier than that. Im surprised that's happening in your town at the town scale because it sounds like some skull and bones level shit. In most big cities getting on the council is a cakewalk, any moron can do it and that's part of the problem. People join the council with the express purpose of either doing favours for their friends (letting them skip the waiting cue on ultra specific medications, lobbying against train lines to keep the surburb old) or entryism. In my city we've had massive amounts of entryism from christian extremists and antivaxxers despite my area being largely secular.

To be fair small towns are very hard to crack into. There's one I know where there was objectively a better option for mayor and he was snubbed purely because he was a 'blow in' (had been living there for 20 years and that's still too foreign for them). Instead the town drunk who was born there was elected.
