>>2849187Maybe, but I read Mark Rudd's autobiography about his time in the WU and his account makes them sound like a bunch of idealistic rich kids with money and connections who absolutely could not handle the fact that nobody took them seriously. Before the Weather Underground, they were in SDS. They met with a Vietnamese delegation and basically asked, "How do we start a revolution in America and help defeat the US military?" The Vietnamese response was more or less: please don't. Organize peaceful protests, donate money if you can, and remember that the Vietnamese and American people aren't your enemies.
That absolutely shattered them. They wanted to be Che Guevara, instead they got told to hand out flyers and write checks. The Vietnamese were trying to be practical, but the SDS radicals heard it as condescension. They were so desperate to be taken seriously as revolutionaries that being told to do something useful felt like a personal humiliation
