Gig Companies Are Using Your Data to See How Low a Wage You’ll Accept
Ride-hailing companies have long used algorithms to determine how much to pay drivers for a trip – and tech vendors in the US are now exporting that model to other sectors, according to a Washington Center for Equitable Growth report from last year. According to the report, platforms like Uber and Lyft track users’ personal data – like how often they find work through the app and for what wage – to find workers who will accept the bare minimum without the protections that come with fixed-term contracts.

Europe’s heatwave drives electricity prices to new highs as demand soars
Great Britain imported electricity from Europe at more than six times the normal price on Tuesday as the high-pressure heat dome has slowed wind speeds, hitting renewable energy generation, and led to outages at multiple gas plants across the country. The heatwave has caused windfarms on the continent to slow, and led to lower output at some nuclear plants in France, where high riverwater temperatures are making it more difficult to cool the reactors.

‘This is injustice’: how leftist zines were used to sentence anti-ICE protesters to decades in prison
After a three-week trial, a jury found eight of nine protesters guilty of “providing material support to terrorists”, among other crimes. For the Sotos, this “material support” included owning a “printing press” used to print anarchist zines and being part of a leftist book club, the federal government argued. The couple had already left the scene by the time guns were drawn. All eight of the defendants sentenced so far have received unusually harsh sentences – 30 to 100 years – essentially life in prison.

Judge bars immigration arrests at US courthouses in a setback for Trump
The Trump administration’s reversal of long-standing policy against arrests at immigration court resulted “not from merely unreasoned decision-making but a complete lack of decision-making,” wrote U.S. District Judge Casey Pitts of San Francisco. Authorities failed to address the “chilling effect” of arrests on whether people attend court hearings.

Mamdani-backed candidates sweep Democratic primaries in New York City
It was a clean sweep for Mamdani, who waded into the House primaries earlier this year, spending his political capital to boost three leftwing allies – a gamble that would test his popularity and his influence. With his slate of candidates all but certain to be elected to Congress in November, Mamdani has left his stamp on the state’s congressional delegation and expanded his ascendant progressive movement.

17 states and trade group sue California over plastics packaging law
The lawsuit, filed Monday in federal court, argues that California’s recently finalized regulations that will gradually require companies to scale back single-use plastics and ensure all packaging is recycling or compostable should be struck down. The plaintiffs called the regulations “onerous mandates” that will cause steep price increases in everyday necessities that will be passed on, at least in part, to consumers.

“Starmer is the symptom, not the disease”, says the Communist Party of Britain
"Keir Starmer is a symptom of Britain’s political crisis, not its cause. His successor must realise that unless Labour ditches Starmer’s toxic cocktail of austerity, economic insecurity and war, the next political crisis will bring a far-right government to power. Starmer’s resignation less than two years after a general election in which Labour won a parliamentary majority of 174 seats, confirms the failure of his authoritarian New Labour tribute act, and the increasing instability of Britain’s ruling class.

Tudeh Party of Iran, "War Profiteers" and the Need to Achieve a Lasting Peace!
…. In the midst of these clashes, after the Islamic Republic’s retaliatory attacks on US bases in the region, Trump threatened to attack Iran much harder and seize Iran’s oil resources, including Kharg Island. Trump’s outrageous remarks exposed the aggressive nature of US imperialism to the judgment of world public opinion even more than before. However, after the world expressed concern and condemned Trump’s position, and considering the adverse consequences that the long-term closure of the Strait of Hormuz would have had for the world economy, including the United States itself, Trump, claiming that the leaders of the Islamic Republic had been in contact with him and were serious about peace, announced that the principles of a general agreement or understanding with the Islamic Republic to end the war had been finalized and that an agreement or memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two countries would be signed soon. The events of recent months have shown once again that the Islamic Republic is facing a series of internal and external challenges, each of which alone can endanger the stability of the ruling political system. However, what today, along with the external threat, seriously challenges the ruling regime is the internal situation of the country. Iran's economy is going through one of the most difficult periods. Chronic inflation, devaluation of the national currency, increase in poverty and unemployment, and the spread of social inequality have had a negative impact on the daily lives of millions of hard-working Iranians. The concern of many families is to provide and secure the minimum necessities of life for survival.

On June 25, France Puts Socialist Anasse Kazib and the Movement for Palestine on Trial
France is about to hold a trial with significant implications for the international movement for Palestine. On June 25, Anasse Kazib, a French railroad worker, labor activist, and revolutionary socialist, will defend himself against charges of “apology for terrorism.” These charges stem from social media posts expressing solidarity with the people of Gaza. The trial is part of the French government’s ongoing crackdown on Palestine solidarity. Another member of Révolution Permanente (RP) — a sister organization and publication of Left Voice, for which Anasse is a spokesperson — will also face trial for “apology for terrorism.” Similar charges have been brought against many prominent figures on the French Left, including leaders of the country’s main trade union federation, French-Palestinian MEP Rima Hassan, and Olivia Zemor, a 78-year-old Jewish activist who founded the group EuroPalestine. In a shocking display of France’s repressive climate, Zemor has already been sentenced to two years in prison.
