Leonardo Edinburgh factory targeted by pro-Palestine activists
PROTESTERS have blockaded the entrance to an Edinburgh weapons factory with links to Israel. Around 100 pro-Palestine activists gathered outside the Leonardo factory on Crewe Road, in Edinburgh, on Thursday morning. They demanded that the firm "drops the F-35 contract" with weapons firm Lockheed Martin, which they said is complicit in Israel's genocide in Gaza as well as attacks on Iran and Lebanon.

Germany massively expands federal police powers
The German Bundestag last week approved a new law that significantly expands the powers of the federal police by providing the scope to use drones, artificial intelligence, and increased surveillance of telecommunications. The law also makes it easier to incarcerate immigrants due for deportation. The government argued that the law — the first new federal police law in Germany since 1994 — is essential to keep up with technological developments, and the changing nature of threats to public safety.

Iranian press review: Political figures expect continued but limited confrontation with US
The Tehran City Council is considering a plan that would require shelters and safe spaces in many buildings across the capital and allow metro stations and public parking facilities to be used as emergency shelters. The proposed plan suggests that officials consider the possibility of continuing military conflicts. … Masih Mohajeri, a cleric and politician close to Iran's reformist political groups, has called for confronting pro-war voices inside the country. … Mohajeri described the governments of the US and Israel as "fascist and racist", arguing that a single military action would not be enough to confront them.

From abundance to retreat: what happened to Nile water levels in Sudan?
Families have been forced to buy water delivered in barrels, with the price of a single barrel reaching SDG10,000. Many residents are instead relying on salty groundwater from wells including the Musa Abdeen well, the Nour Aldayem factory well, and another located near the water station. The resident said the underlying problem was that the area surrounding the pumps had dried out after the river channel shifted away from the intake points. Authorities have deployed heavy machinery and loaders to excavate a new channel that will allow water to reach the pump wells once again.

Defending its citizens abroad opens up another political front between Mexico’s government and the opposition
Not even the deaths of 17 Mexicans while in the custody of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has brought a pause to polarization in Mexican politics. President Claudia Sheinbaum’s bid to close ranks and call for national unity against the Trump administration, arguing that sovereignty and the lives of fellow Mexicans are at stake, has floundered. The response from parties opposed to the ruling government arrived quickly, but not in the expected way. The opposition has turned the presidential appeal into yet another political front in an international crisis that is only beginning.

Another federal agency wants in on student loans
Administration officials, who have been discussing the idea in small industry groups, are trying to attract the private sector, according to two people who participated in one of the meetings. The plan, they said, involves having the Small Business Administration spearhead the program, even though the agency was passed over as the new home of the nation’s student loan portfolio. Experts and former agency officials see two compounding problems: A similar program failed spectacularly not that long ago, and SBA, a small agency that typically works with businesses rather than individuals, has a history of failing to combatfraud andconduct oversight.

Wildfire smoke makes air unhealthy from the US Midwest to East Coast. Officials say stay inside
Officials in many cities urged residents to stay inside or wear masks outside as air quality reached unhealthy to hazardous levels, meaning it’s unhealthy for anyone, regardless of health conditions. The smoke is coming from fires that are burning primarily in Canada but also in northern Minnesota. A lingering high pressure system has trapped the smoke close to the ground, said Steven Freitag, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Detroit, where air quality was among the worst in the world for major cities.

David Sirota's Lever Time: We’re Still Living In The 2016 Election
Ten years ago this week, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) ended his first presidential run and endorsed Hillary Clinton. Now, his chief strategist says the primary process was rigged. Today on Lever Time, David Sirota sits down with Tad Devine, longtime political consultant and chief strategist for Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign. Devine reveals why he believes the Democratic National Committee tilted the scales against Sanders, why his populist message has staying power, and why the biggest obstacle in future elections is the Democratic Party itself.

Richard Wolff on the Left’s New Openings in 2026
In the second half of the nineteenth century, as Russia’s feudalism ended and its empire tottered, the great Russian novelist, Nikolay Chernyshevsky, reflected the deepening concerns and anxieties of his time in his 1863 novel, What Is to Be Done? It offered a socialist answer. Forty years later, a crude and rapacious capitalism had rushed in to replace Russian feudalism. The ex-serfs then began to understand that they had not escaped from exploitation as they had hoped and dreamed. Rather, they suffered a new form of it as industrial workers. Vladimir Lenin reflected the concerns and anxieties of that form in his pamphlet, with its deliberately repeated title, “What Is to Be Done?” It too offered a socialist answer. Today a declining US empire upsets and undermines US capitalism as it rattles and shakes the world economy. International laws are increasingly ignored, and crude authoritarianisms increasingly haunt domestic politics. Many around the world are asking that old question yet again — as well they should. Here is yet another socialist answer.

“Yanks to the Rescue”: 30 years since the U.S. helped re-elect Boris Yeltsin
The 3rd of July marked the 30th anniversary of Boris Yeltsin's re-election in one of the most consequential presidential contests of the twentieth century. Western governments, corporate media and international financial institutions celebrated the result as a triumph of "democracy" over the alleged threat of a communist return. For the Russian working class, however, the election meant something entirely different. It marked the decisive consolidation of the capitalist counter-revolution that had begun with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. By 1996, the chief architect of Russia's capitalist restoration, Boris Yeltsin, was anything but a popular leader. Five years of "shock therapy," mass privatisations and capitalist restructuring had devastated the productive foundations inherited from socialism. Millions saw their savings wiped out, wages went unpaid for months, unemployment and poverty exploded, while a handful of oligarchs accumulated enormous fortunes by appropriating public wealth built through decades of socialist construction. The war in Chechnya further eroded the government's legitimacy, and Yeltsin's approval ratings had collapsed. Under normal political conditions, his defeat appeared entirely possible. That prospect alarmed not only Russia's newly emerging capitalist class but also Washington and its Western allies. For U.S. imperialism, the issue was never Yeltsin as an individual. He had become the indispensable political instrument for making capitalist restoration irreversible.

Ah yes the technological development of the cops not wanting to ask those annoying judges with their law and stuff when they feel like spying on and arresting people
